Catamount State Forest has something for Everyone, whether it be hiking, fishing, canoeing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling or just a historic place for History Buffs to visit. Catamount State Forest boasts over 1000 acres for your Natural enjoyment in Southwestern Colrain, Massachusetts. This is the first place documented where our American Flag was first flown over a public school, in 1812. Many Field trips by our schools visit this site yearly. Our Snowmobile trails are well- groomed in Winter, and part of over a 50 mile loop of snowmobile Trails throughout our town. The groomed trails also provide great access for cross country skiers as well. Lots of foundations and an old railroad bed from days of Old, are accompanied by beautiful, Pond McLeod, and WildLife abounds. Catamount is also a name for cougars or Mountain lions, which we have noted in this area, and also have a sculpture depicting this wild animal as you enter onto Colrain Mountain, Rte 112.A great place for discovering, facts of Old and getting back to Nature. Lately heard on the news..Parts of Colrain and surrounding Towns in Northwestern Ma, could possibly become, one day, named as National Forests.
Old railroad bed which makes for great skiing along a beautiful reservoir through the woods. A must do!!!
it felt like being back home in new hampshire. recently discovered a beaver pond, more foundations, and the other way to get into the forest. this place will certainly see more of me in the months to come.
The trail/road took a beating with the tropical storm, so watch footing as you walk. It's worth the uphill walk when you reach the reservoir at the top, with large stone shores. bring a lunch to sit and enjoy.
