Website said that it was open on holidays. Went on Columbus Day - no one around. Had e-mailed and called ahead of time - no answer. Seems to be an odd attraction.
Old Greenfield Village is only open by appointment and is not listed in the phone book, making it difficult to get to! The Chamber of Commerce can, no doubt, help you with that.We enjoyed visiting the school house, church, store, tinsmith's shop, and more. All have been built or restored by the owner as an act of love. A retired school teacher, he obviously has done this as an act of love and with a reverence for history. If you're in the area, it's worth a stop, especially if you're a history buff or enjoy going back to Grandma's time. But remember to call ahead.
A beautiful and quaint New England main street not unlike many others scattered through many towns in Vermont, New Hampshire, etc etc. However, at around dusk, things began to get a little strange. You see, these creatures dressed in their best thrift store rags started coming out from what appeared to be thin air. You began to hear them shout and yell, they would demand cigarettes from one another, and one would break loose from the pack and run at his highest speed to this local mini mart where he would bring back treats to the rest of his pack. Kind of scary, but I will say they kept to themselves.
A New England "Williamsburg" well worth a half-day's visit. Even if you don't buy a ticket to enter some of the historic houses, just walking around the area is wonderful.
Between visiting Old Sturbridge Village, Plymouth Plantation, Strawbery Banke Museum in NH, and Historic Deerfield the BEST by far was Old Greenfield Village!!! I cannot say enough about this place! I've been twice and wouldn't mind going back again sometime. The amount of stock in each of the buildings that this nice retired school teacher and his wife put together is astonishing and so interesting! There is an old butcher shop, General store, wagon wheel/wood shop, printing press, pharmacy, soda jerk, church, school house, Dr.'s and Dentist's office etc...Very inexpensive, I think it was $4.00 a few yrs. ago! It's a self guided tour and there is a tape recorder in each building that you can listen if you choose to. The man lives on the property and is very friendly and proud of all that he has built up. He even had a sand box for children to play Archeologist and find some fun gems and artifacts.
Don't bother. A kind of sad attempt to make something of nothing. Might be closed permanently, now, anyway.
Went here on a whim after living in the Amherst area for two years. It's a great site all hand built. I was given a personal tour and learned a lot, the man who built it has devoted a lot of time and energy to recreating a whole town. There was even an old print press. A delightful day trip and a must see for a history buff.
If you are in the area I highly recommend a visit to Old Greenfield Village. Its located at the base of the Mohawk Trail in Greenfield, MA. and the proprietor, Waine Morse, hand built every building and put together all of the antiques and "scenes" of this village. He has an entire Black Smith Shop, an Apothecary, a Soda Shop etc. and so much more. Its really a step back in time to the way life was in this area a hundred years ago or more!!!!! You have to visit to appeciate this historical gem that Waine spent a life time putting together!!!!!
