Definitely a MUST to anyone who is visiting the island. The entire experience is spot on. We saw many types of sanderlings, plovers, etc. we saw many gray seals on & close to the beaches. The lighthouse itself is a photo op ready made as well as a great vantage point from the top. Guide was great. Don't miss it.
I have been enjoying trips to Great Point for over 50 years and never tire of the scenery out there. This remote, hard to get to spot has breathtaking scenery and vast stretches of empty beaches. The jeep ride is fun and worth the trouble. As kids we use to camp out at the point ( long since outlawed ) and enjoy what was once one of the best surf fishing spots on the east coast. Sadly , the massive seal population explosion has taken over the point with seals actually stealing fish off fisherman's lines. The aggressive seals are protected by Federal Laws and cannot be disturbed. What used to be rare sitings have turned into huge gatherings of seals taking over our prime fishing spots. Seals aside, Great Point is a special place, worthy of the long trek out there. Go if you can.
We rented a jeep from Affordable Rentals and headed out to Great Point after picking up some lunch from Bartletts Farm. You will need a little over a quarter tank of gas to get out there. There is a ranger station where you can deflate your tires (and then fill them upon return). It is a great trip if you like a little bit of off roading adventure where you can see different foliage and animals.
This is worth the effort to get to. Kind of a pain in the neck to rent a jeep, let the air out of the tires to drive across the soft sand and drive up along the beach to the lighthouse but it is absolutely worth the effort. It's a beautiful place to relax. It's probably something that most tourist on the island don't get too.absolutely beautiful place.
Amazing spot to spend a few hours chillin on the beach. Particularly nice and quiet in the offseason. Dare I rate this too well as it may attract to much attention. Just love it here in the falll
Rent a Jeep and see this lighthouse; you drive on the beach and see rare birds and seals... So gorgeous!
This is a great place to relax, read a book on the beach and just take in the surrounding. Peaceful town. Lots of history in this old island. Didn't see too much but what I did was great.
You can get to this light by either walking (a long way!), approved trip which I believe leaves 2-3 times a day or, if you are brave like me, you can take a 4x4 across the beach and dunes - it is about 4-5 miles. At the entrance - wauwinet Rd - there is a small car park you pull into to deflate your tyres to 15 bars (or slightly lower) - you then pay a beach fee of $35 and away you go - very carefully though as you don't want to get stuck!Took about 30mins to drive out to the light where you can stop on the beach in front of it - see my photo. When you get back to the entrance you drive about 200yds up the road and on the right are 2 air hoses so you can re-inflate your tyres. If you are feeling brave then definately worth it.
Visited Great point for the second time this year and where lucky enough to arrive and have the rangers at the top of the light house invite us up! Wow what a treat......the view from up there is breathtaking.
but warm and spots of sun. The lighthouse is a great photo op. They do seem to be making the sea bird habitat bigger each year.
Bring some food, a book, and just hang out for a while. Not many people, due to remote location and required 4-wheel drive.
This is a challenging trip but like no place else you have been. If you can arrange to get up on the light house the view will be worth any challenges.
We rented a jeep and drove out to the Great Point Lighthouse. Pack a lunch and spend the day. Great for seal watching.
Breathtaking beach & lighthouse on the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge! I recommend the tour they offer so you can actually tour the lighthouse. Views are spectacular. Tour guide life longer native Nantucket & gave a great narrative. Small group 8 people, which is great, reservation a must! I would highly recommend tour but also renting a jeep (off road permit included) driving out yourself on the beach & spend the day. Not crowded at all! And just stunning! You can only get there by 4x4 or boat. You will have to stop & let air out of tires, super easy. Just a lovely place to see & one you won't ever forget!
We decided not to rent a jeep as we like walking and walked along the beach from Wauwinet to the lighthouse. It is a long way but we had a fantastic day with seals following us as we walked and amazing birds much of which you miss in a jeep. The nesting seabirds are wonderful spoiled by parents allowing kids to run about chasing them despite clear signs asking people to stay near the shoreline. This is definitely worth a trip.
