This lighthouse is one that is worth the drive to the other side of The Vineyard. With the beautiful clay cliffs that are slowly falling into the ocean, if they don't preserve the lighthouse soon, you may not get to see it in the near future so go while you can! This is also a location they filmed a few scenes of "Jaws" at so film lovers enjoy the cinematic history.
The local bus is the cheapest way to go and even tho it's long and you have to change several times the trip to the cliffs and the light are worth it! Free to see unless you go in it's 5$. Then walk to the cliffs lookout with the food and shops. Don't forget to take the path the beach! Beautiful area! Bring change for the restrooms tho it's 50cents.
Take the time to drive around the island and see the lighthouse and the colorful cliffs. It is a marvelous display of GOD'S handiwork.
Great view, beautiful scenery and gorgenous cliffs will take your breath away. Nice place to come and take some pictures and get inspired to do whatever you like in life. A must see!
The trip to the top was unremarkable. The guide who we met at the door was very informative. The view from the top was great. Just beware the floor is painted grey and there is a step off the light platform(I missed it and badly twisted my ankle)
I was able to go up inside the lighthouse all the way up to the light. That gets warm when it is going around near you. Not a climb for the faint of heart, and tall people need to watch their heads. You climb a winding metal staircase inside. You can go outside once you get up there, but not much railing out there. Great views from the light itself though. The fee is only to go up into the lighthouse. There is no fee for the grounds. There are markers warning not to go over the side as that is owned by the Aquinnah Wampanoags. It is meant to protect the clay cliffs.
We lucked into the lighthouse being open today, so we walked up the path and met the volunteers trying to save the light. For $5 you can climb all the way up to the spinning lenses. It's quite warm up there. One level down you can walk around the top of the light and get some incredible views of the Gay Head cliffs and the rest of the island. The admission fee is helping to save the light which needs to be moved further from the crumbling cliffs.
The light house is great and the view is amazing! The shops were pretty good. There are no free public rest rooms, even in the restaaurants. You have to pay .50 cents to use the bathroom. Overall it was pretty good. The people that worked the lighthouse were great! They were very knowledgeable and very friendly.
Beautiful, historic structure that is currently raising money to protect its future on the island. On days when it is open, you can climb to the top and a wonderful view of the north shore of Martha's Vineyard, including the nearby clay cliffs. This is a really fun stop for families with children.
had a spectacular day to take in the views and walk around the little shops near the lighthouse. nice drive across the island since we stayed in chappy. well worth the trip and beaches didn't seem too crowded if you want to make a day of it.
Take in the magnificent view from the viewing area at the end of the row of take out restaurants and gift shops. Or better yet from the lighthouse itself. Despite many visits to this part of the island, this was my first time up in the light house. It was an experience well worth the climb and the contribution to preserving the lighthouse. Even photographers armed with just an iPhone can obtain spectacular shots.
We enjoyed the lovely views and lighthouse. The guide gave us a history lesson about the light and the area. Fun climb and not too high for the height challenged. Berries were ripe and we spent some time picking them before heading to the beach.
Not open all year, but open now before they move it inland. Totally different view from cliffs. Volunteers were great and Informative. Get a bumper sticker etc. to help w/fundraising. Also get a pass in Edgartown for museums, church and historic homes and you won't pay to get in to lighthouses otherwise $5 ea. Nice historic pictures of previous lighthouse or keepers homes available.
Simply a beautiful place to snap a bunch of pictures!!! The cliffs & light make for gorgeous landscape shots!! We will be coming back to check out the beach too!!!
This Lighthouse, and the adjacent Aquinnah Cliffs make for some fascinating shots, and it is worth stopping for if you are in the area and are able to make multiple stops. The Lighthouse itself is not one of the white ones seen elsewhere on the island, so it stands out particularly well against the red cliffs in the background. Check it out.
