Next time you are on the Eastern Shore, whether or not you love lighthouses, you should stop by the replica Choptank River Lighthouse. A screwpile light, this replica was completed in 2012 and houses a mini museum documenting the rich maritime history of Cambridge and Dorchester County Maryland. It is open daily from May to October and during the other months by appointment. No charge although there is a donation box. Call the dockmaster and he is usually around to let you into this fine lighthouse! Views of the river and surrounding areas are great - you might even spot an eagle or two! There are displays about the skipjacks and bugeyes that plied their trade on the river back in the day and a bit about James Michener and his novel "Chesapeake," set in the Heart of the Chesapeake, Dorchester County! Definitely a stop when you are in the area. It is on the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway and near lots of little shops and restaurants up the street in historic Cambridge. Nice small town feel!
