I am a dealer and this is what i tell my customers who ask... why don't i just go and bid myself and i say by all means. If you don't mind standing in the heat of the summer or the freezing cold of the winter, getting really dirty, having to schedule the bathroom, and standing there all day to be outbid on the item you want then go. If you love excitement and love to bid, then GO! Don't be intimidated but it is not for the prissy or picky. Don't wear your white tennis skirt for god's sake (i have seen that) Don't come drunk at 7:30 am (i have seen that) don't bring your 5 barefooted children and expect to control them (i have seen that). To the person that complained about being carried off, i say you must have been acting terribly. I have seen them catch someone stealing (twice) and they called them out and just said leave. To the person that complains this is for dealers, it is an auction. If you want to outbid the dealer then just keep bidding. Keep your white paper number high in the air and they will see you, don't be timid but expect to pay retail prices for something you really want. it is not the bargain basement it used to be. LOVE, LOVE , LOVE Crumpton. Give it a try.

I used to go as a kid many years ago when they auctioned animals as well as stuff. Now it is just household. There are a lot of antique dealers and you don't get bargains too much any more. Some of it is junk, but there is a lot of nice antiques as well as decent furniture for the house. It is certainly entertaining if you have a few hours on a Wednesday morning. There is food but the restaurant is very just ok- standard over cooked American food... There is also a deli, and other food you can buy. I love this place

Crumpton has something for everyone, and I'm not referring to the merchandise for sale any given week. For casual visitors: Crumpton is a great place to visit as a casual observer. Good Amish food onsite, a lot of action and excitement. Dress warm in the winter, or as close to naked as you're comfortable with in the summer, as the part of the sale is outdoors and the inside climate is regulated strictly by big fans and wood stoves. Probably some of the best people watching in the world.For dealers and non-dealers (buying): Look at it before you buy it. Know what you're doing, and you can make money here. Same as any auction in the world. The sale moves very quickly, so pay attention and don't wait until the last second to bid. Registration at the front office is painless.For dealers (selling): It is a wholesale market. Come with unrealistic expectations and you will go home angry.For non-dealers, non-collectors, heirs, etc. (selling): To be completely honest, you probably think your old stuff is worth a lot more than it is. For a number of reasons, the market for most antiques is drastically weaker than it was years and decades ago. Crumpton is a fine place to sell things for a very low commission, to a relatively knowledgeable audience. However, as someone not professionally engaged in a business relating to antiques, evaluating the quality and value of your grandma's antiques is like asking a brain surgeon to rebuild your transmission. Your opinion about antiques (whether they're yours or not) is as valuable as a plumber's opinion on whether that mole on your back is malignant. You may think they gave your stuff away, but if that's all they did would hundreds of dealers be selling their stuff there every week?

Let me begin by saying that I read many of the reviews from others, and I must take exception to the many negative reviews. We were treated exceptionally well by all of the staff we encountered, especially the ladies in the office. As for the outside selling area, sure, it's "organized confusion", but well run and fast paced. I have been to hundreds of auctions over many years and I give Dixons a "thumbs up"! With regards to other reviews stating that the "dealers" always get the bids, keep this thought in mind-you as a private bidder can always out bid a dealer. Simple-a dealer must bid to make a profit, if they are buying for stock. I thought it was well done, probably a bit overwhelming for a "newbie", but we will definitely be back. We only bid on one item that my wife wanted and I guess a "dealer" wanted it more...oh well. Had a great time! Caveat emptor!

Every Weds, except holidays, they hold a huge auction. Furniture, objects de art, and just about anything you can think of Can/could be there. Items vary from week to week depending on who brings in what to sell. Selling starts promptly at 8 A.M. at the general auction, furniture sales start at 9 A.M. and jewelry starts at 1 P.M. (I think!). At the same time they are running an outdoor auction similar to a giant yard sale! A lot to see and take-in! It is a speedy auction and the items are moved right along. Auctioneers are very good and fair. We go several times a year.

Never thought of writing a review about an auction house sale but, since I was discussing with friends about my adventures up north in the late 1990's and remembering what happened to me at Crumpton's in Maryland, I thought it best to let unwary seller's in on a few secrets that Crumpton's auctioneers and they're regular buyers don't want you them know. First; my vist was well before January 20013, but I do not have the option of selecting the exact date. Secondly, before any unwitting seller happens to fall into the path of Crumpton's - wait and see how the auctions are held before you opt to submit your items. You may not want to plop down your heirlooms or cherished treasures afterwards. I lost over $50,000.00 worth of merchandise in a matter of minutes, and, almost went to jail (by a brother-in law Deputy on staff at the time), because I wouldn't accept the $330.00 that was shoved in my face for what they claimed was all that my merchandise had sold for. When I say "shoved" I mean just that! As soon as I objected I was picked up off the floor in the air by 2 deputies and taken into their account settlement room with clubs in my face. I was then given a choice- "take the money or go to jail!" Have never been back to Maryland since and I have no plans to return-ever! Crumpton's sucks for sellers - and buyers are mostly friends, relatives or business associates of the Dixon family who own the "less than reputable" dump!

If you are into auctions, old stuff, or even antiques it is a must see. The auction is on Wednesday (I seem to remember). So go and have a unique experience.

Love this auction. Takes a lot of stamina to keep up. Bring a friend to help you keep track of what you want to bid on.
