We now drive 45 minutes to Hanover instead of going to this theater! It would be one thing if it was cheap, but this theater is *more expensive* than Hanover, with *much less* to offer. I thought the cashier was wrong when she asked for $18 for a child and an adult at a *matinee*. Nope, that was the price. To see a normal movie (not 3D, etc), with no stadium seating, old, worn out everything. Even my very young child prefers to be in the car for nearly two hours to go to a theater (Hanover) that feels like a real movie experience. It's high time for someone to invest in this place so Westminster has a decent theater.
I rarely go to this theater anymore. Lots of disrespectful teenagers (and I'm not a curmudgeon) and the management does little to police them. Old seats, musty smells. Definitely time for an upgrade. Do yourself a favor and drive a little further to Hunt Valley or Hanover PA
If you are a local and want to see serious movies rather than kiddie films or lots of violence, most of the time you need to travel nearly an hour away to see a worthwhile film. There are rarely more than 8 or 9 serious films in a year.
This theater has looked the same since I was a kid going there, before stadium seating was a big thing. I remember the hype when the AMC in Owings Mills was put in and I swore I would never see another movie at the Westminster theater again. Let's face it, the movie prices with tickets and snacks is insane these days. Why am I going to spend the same prices at a run down old movie theater like this when I can drive a little bit to go to Hunt Valley or Owings Mills, or my favorite Gateway Theater in Gettysburg. I just think they need a major overhaul, to put in stadium seating and redo the dingy seats and carpeting. I was amazed when I finally went to see a movie there (I would say it had been 12 years since my last visit) and it was EXACTLY the same. But, they do most of their business from the local teens, who don't care about how clean or new the theater is and are just looking for some place to go on a Saturday night. They should be focused on drawing in the money makers in Westminster, who are looking for a more up scale experience.
This is Westminster's local theater for the latest movies showing and they do a decent job with upkeep of the theater. We can all complain about the food prices being too high, but that's all theaters. At least the popcorn is always fresh!
It's hard to believe that an area as built up as Westminster still has an old, dumpy theater like this. This theater, in one word, sucks.1.) There's no stadium seating. You may not think that's really important until you go to a theater that doesn't have it. Thankfully it wasn't busy when we went, so no one was blocking our view.2.) Very uncomfortable seats. First off, they don't recline. Second, they're very low to the ground. Third, they're just not comfortable. 3.) The screens are small. The screens are especially small compared to other nicer theaters, and they're just not up to today's standards. 4.) Subpar sound. My husband and I saw Guardians of the Galaxy here recently and the sound was loud and distorted. Not clear. Definitely NOT surround sound. 5.) Only one women's and men's bathroom for the entire theater. And only a few stalls to boot. The women's bathroom was dirty and the stalls needed a paint job. 6.) No one takes your tickets. It's not like this theater is hard to navigate, but's it's kind of nice and normal to have an employee tear the ticket stub and direct you to the right place.7.) Theaters aren't cleaned after each showing. I thought this was a given at most theaters?8.) Higher ticket prices. At R/C theaters in Hanover, it's $8.50 a ticket vs. Regal's price of $11 a ticket. What do you get for $2.50 more? Absolutely nothing. My husband aptly said, "It's time to tear it down and start over." I think that's about right. This theater is old and outdated and it's obvious they've made zero effort to improve it. It's not worth seeing a movie here, especially when R/C or Gateway Gettysburg theaters are both newer, nicer, and cheaper.
Probably the worst theater in the area. I will drive to Gettysburg, or Hanover before going to this theater again. No stadium seating, Small screens. Just doesn't make sense to pay the same price for a ticket to this place when for the same money you can drive 30 minutes and have luxury seating with better everything.
I thought I might never get another opportunity to write this review as I have publicly stated that I never wanted to view another movie in this dump of a theater. I am an avid movie fan and prefer the big screen and big sound accompanied by the aroma of fresh popped popcorn to the TV screen. For those unfamiliar with this establishment it is located in the town mall hidden in the back corner next to the food court. It is part of the Regal chain which offers the best rewards program of any of the movie chains. As of this writing it is the only movie theater in all of Carroll County Maryland. On a slow day you can walk in and buy your ticket at the candy counter and then wait in the lone line that sells snacks until you get your turn. The ticket seller is the ticket taker(and the usher too). You walk down a dingy hall that leads back to the nine screens showing the current pictures. Each of the viewing areas are like walking back into the 1960’s not because they have been built to give a retro feel but because they are that old. The seats are firm, they don’t recline. They are all on the same plane, no stadium seating. For those of you too old to remember this passé style if you are unfortunate enough to go to a sell out movie and the person in front of you happens to be tall or have big hair the only thing you will see is the back of their head. Even though this place is 13 miles from my home I much prefer to travel 21.5 miles and 50 years to the much newer Regal cineplex in Frederick. Oh in case you were wondering why I was here my power went out the night before and when it hadn’t come back on I headed to Westminster to get some hot breakfast. After breakfast I walked the mall trying to kill some time. When I called home to see if my phone answering machine had electricity to use to answer my call it failed to pick up. ergo I was a prisoner!
We hadn’t been to Regal Westminster in a couple years. Unfortunately, ownership has done nothing to improve the venue since our last visit. It’s still as rundown as it was two years ago.Pros: 1. Conveniently located at the mall in the center of Westminster2. Self-serve ticket machine3. First run movies4. Prices are comparable to other theatersCons: 1. Bathroom was dirty2. Theater was dirty (they didn’t bother to clean between showings)3. The property is tired and long overdue for renovation/update.4. Non-stadium seating.5. Rows of seats are very long. What this means is that you to climb over many people to get out of the row, or if you are on the aisle then many people will be climbing over you.Summary: Despite the convenience of being in the center of Westminster, we won’t be going out of our way to come back to Regal 9 Westminster until they get a major overhaul (unless we have an impulse to catch a movie and it’s not showing elsewhere)
