We attended a traditional Garifuna dinner and cultural event that was supposed to be a buffet for several people. No one else showed up, so it didn't end up being a buffet. Seemed most of the food was heated up leftovers, but interesting anyway. The band was ok. Sold me a blank CD for $15 (which I bargained from $20!). Kind of a rip off. $25 for the event - a little pricey for what it was.
This is a litle nice restaurant where you could eat traditionell food and learn a couple of the traditionel culture of the garafundu. The family does everything with heart. Meens cooking and explaining about the culture. A dinner with buffet and traditionel music, drums cost only 25 us. This restaurant is obligatory if you visit san pedro.
Fun to eat the local Mayan food , and hear about the culture and see the dancing and drummers...even got some of us up there trying it. Definitely worth it so go to the cultural night
We ate here for lunch the first day on the island. It is set back from the road, a little hard to find, but the Garifuna food was great!
This cultural center features the Garifuna people. I saw it mentioned on the hotel wall and they made all the arrangments. For 25 US dollars, it included a show that had dancing, singing, and learning to play an instrument for a bit as well as a very tasty Garifuna dinner. There was a video as well about the culture. Since we were not going to have time to go to the deep south to see where Garifuna communities are, we at least got a small taste. Crafts for sale as well.
Well I have been there several times for lunch. The service is great abit slow depending on your order so don't be in a rush if u plan to enjoy your food. Its a bit hidden from it all. A great educational experience also. I ts main dishes are all traditional Garinagu dishes.
Loved the food...service slow and lovely...don't be in a hurry and you won't be disappointed. You shouldn't be in a hurry while on San Pedro anyway...Did I mention the food? Excellent.
Popped in here for lunch and learned a bit about Garifuna culture and had a delicious meal of fried fish fillet. Would love to visit during a cultural event.
Juliet is awesome.... Mosquitos ate me up on the way there, but a great educational experience, and the food us wonderful !
This was high on our to do list while in Belize and it did not disappoint! It was a thorough and entertaining presentation of the Garifuna in and around Belize. The owner Julia is a school teacher and made the presentation so easy to follow and interactive. She was friendly and knowledgable and went out of her way to answer the many, many questions we had. The drummers that performed were talented and enjoyable. And the food!! I can't not mention the delicious food that was prepared as dishes of the Garifuna. I definitely recommend an evening here for all ages. It's a can't miss attraction.
Cultural Entertainment Center is a stretch. This is a small restaurant aka as a "Hole in the Wall" in the states. If you're interested in Garifuna culture and food it's well worth a visit. The owner is Garifuna and will chat with you about the history of her people. Unfortunately, they didn't have any performances while I was in San Pedro; however, I went for lunch and the Hudot (Fish in Coconut Broth with Sweet Plantain Mashed Ball) was terrific! Pros: Great Garifuna foodCons: Hard to contact. No answer by phone. You have to go by to make arrangements. Its a bit difficult to find.
If you visit Belize, do THIS before you do anything else!!! It puts many other things you see into perspective. Especially fun with kids!! Julia and Frank Martinez (with the help of their family and friends) have put together a wonderful expose' on Belize's Garafuna people and culture, which includes food, dancing, a historical video, and more. The event starts at 6:30pm and ends about 9:00pm (or whenever you get tired of eating or asking questions). Very informal, very fun. Julia is a school teacher during the day, and she is very effective at getting the historical and cultural information across to her audience - mostly because you become a participant in everything that occurs! If you are shy, you might want to have a rum punch or two before you get there, because you won't be able to sit back and just "observe." This event made put our whole visit to Belize into a different, more thoughtful, perspective. Highly recommended.
This dinner and performance was a spectacular evening for our family. The food is delicious and unique and the dancing and drumming is high energy. The location was about a 15 minute taxi ride from our hotel the Blue Tang inn.The venue itself is fairly low key but comfortable and the staff made us feel very welcomed. They gave us a welcome drink and then an interesting history of the Garifuna culture,The food was prepared and laid out on a table buffet style with curry rice, rice and beans,2 types of fish,a meat dish, bread, and much more as well as dessert.the food was plentiful and tasty. Then the performance with dancing and great drumming and singing. All of us joined in the dancing and after the show we played the drums and took photos with the whole family and performers.Overall it is a great night out, lots of fun and an excellent cultural experience. We were thrilled that we were able to have this memorable experience!Highly recommended!!!
Julia and the rest of the staff were absolutely amazing. The food was excellent, the cultural education memorable, and hopefully our dancing not too offensive. We had a great time and would certainly recommend that visitors to Ambergris Caye visit Black & White Cultural Entertainment Centere.
This family owned and operated restaurant and cultural center is a wonderful authentic experience! The food was delicious, and the portions were large for the price. The drumming and dancing with storytelling made for a unique experience in San Pedro, and a great insight into the Garifuna culture. So glad we stopped by and spent an evening here! This family is wonderful, and they really put their hearts into this place.
