You have to get here by boat. On arrival you meet the local native guide in a wooden thatched roof "reception" then you go on a slow boat through the swamp observing sloths etc. There is also a visit to a rather muddy bat cave.Afterwards you comeback to a freshly cooked typical lunch.A number of native people live on this island and there is even a small school.
I was getting very frustrated the last few days in how to get over to Bastimentos and where i could safely walk around with lots of expensive camera gear to take pictures of the flora & fauna.. did NOT want to take the standard dolphin, snorkle, beach tour like cattle with 15min here and 15min there on a crowded boat. After repeatidly walking the strip in Bocas Town, i stumbled upon someone willing to give me what i wanted, and for a reasonable price. At the far end of the strip at Boteros Bocatorenos Unidos I ran into Capitan Camilo (doncamilo.20@hotmail.com cell: 6845-4839).. and we planned a 5 hour trip around and for a very good price sincebit was essentially a private tour)..The result was one of the most professional tours i have ever been given, and i have more than a few, and in all corners of the globe.. - Camilo speaks english quite well, and is a very nice and personable guy- He knows all the places to go and see things, and you can work with him to map out a trip that suits "your" needs, not what is convenient for the operator- he is flexible, so if you see somethin intriguing you can go off and explore.. be mindful though of the overall time agreed and the distance ( gas is a factor in his planning/pricing)- the guy can absolutely spot the wildlife, and most importantly he knows about good camera angles and will actively position and shift the boat to help you get the best shot. He is also a good camera assistant, e.g. holding spare lenses, shifting & holding leaves out of the way if needed.- he will take good care of you! We were at red frog beach and i wandered down the beach taking scenics, and he was shadowing me and pulled me back as i started to get too close to Wizard beach where "machete muggings" are common.I highly recommend Camilo for anyone wanting to take photos on or around Bastimentos.
Excellent snorkeling in the shallows with more different colors of coral close together than I've ever seen. Abundant fish life, too.
Excelent place, you cant leave bocas without going here. its paradise, water is clear and waves are soft, excelent place to enjoy the beach
Very cool place to visit. Saw lots of Capuchin monkeys, a few sloths, iguanas, parrots and, of course, the red frogs! Visit Red Frog Beach and Polo Beach.
An Island with two great beaches, a cave, an indigenous community, boat dock, restaurant and trails (a big zip line also). We have a difficult time disliking thing in this archipelago.
We stayed on the island for a week at red frog resort villas. The beaches are beautiful with big waves for jumping, surfing and boogie boarding. Nice fine sand. Punta lava restaurant and Palmar restaurant on the beach. Both just ok. Bring some drink and snacks and eat in Bocas town. We hired awesome guide Luis to take is from here to all kinds of must see spots for 2 days like dolphin bay, snorkel crawl cay, zappatillas islands. Four of us on the boat with our guide and nobody else for only $130 a day. Email luisgrimas@hotmail.com.
Red frog beach, chill place with great bar and restaurant. Hostel bocas island lodge is highly recommended, also for families. Try the ziplining, from red frog area; really good assistance by the crew..!
Try and hire a private boat rather than go as part of a tourist group and just potter around the area slowly. We enjoyed it so much more than we would have done on a packed panga
We spent the day at Red Frog Beach and it was worth it! The waves were small enough we could get far out into the water and the sands are beautiful. The bar was run by friendly staff.
I LOVED going to the bat cave. It was right up my alley in terms of a one of a kind adventure. But, we saw many, many people leaving to go to the cave who probably did not have fun. When the guide says you will get wet on this ride, you will get wet. If you go all the way to the back of the cave where the waterfall and pool are, the water really, really does come up to your chin before you get there. Even if you just go a little way in, you are climbing in the old fashioned way and you are walking through a creek. This is not a cave that has been set up for "guided tours". It's just an interesting cave that you can climb through. And if it has been raining (and when does it not rain there), you can expect to slog through several inches of mud for about 10 minutes before you even get to the cave entrance.I thought it was great fun. Just know what you are getting into, is all.
I loved Coral Key so much I had to bring my college students on a field trip to Bocas del Toro so they would the chance to take a tour there. The fish are so amazing and the water is so clear you don't have to dive to see them. The weather is so generous and the locals are warm and friendly. I recommend captain Emilio who took us there from Almiramente to Colon island and then to Coral Key. He's such a nice person. I'm looking forward to visiting again, this time I'm going to bring my son. We're not bold divers but the sea here is so friendly that we can go snorkeling without any worries.
Red Frogs beach is nice. It was pretty calm when we visited although other travelers have reported that the waters can be rough.
My friend and I traveled here on a whim during our stay in Bocas. Apparently it was low tourist season because there was hardly anyone on the island. The water was crystal clear, the weather was perfect and I felt that indeed, I was in paradise.
This beach was clean and during the week, not too crowded! The restaurant near the end, offered good, fresh food.
