Do not miss this place. It is a hidden treasure. There is no place like this museum in the entire country. I want to see it over and over again. Please recommend it to as many people as you can.It will give u a great insight into the Keralan art, culture and architecture all under one roof.

A little out of town but well worth the autorickshaw journey to this beautiful building and the amazing artefacts inside!

I am not a museum kind of a person. We had our flight at night and reached Kochi by 12 O'clock. So we had some time in hand and our driver took us to Folklore Museum. And I am glad that we visited this place.Excellent place where you can experience the culture and traditions of Kerela under one roof. Many old murals and sculptures and scriptures can be found here. On the top floor there was a auditorium which was very unique. The entire Museum is made of wood which was again something very unique.They also have some old antiques on sale. So those who are interested in antique collectibles. will have a nice time here. We got table mats from here, if u spill water on them before serving food they smell like lemon grass.All in all a great place to be, Rs. 200 entry.

This museum is usually on the must visit list of foreigners and the taxi operators invariably take the tourists (native)there. The caretaker of the museum is a Non-Profit Organization. The entrance fee to the museum is Rs.100 (which I thought was a little steep). The floor area of the museum is as such small however it is spread over three floors. The entire museum is made of wood (as claimed) and consists of a lot many artifacts. However majority of the artifacts are not properly displayed and named.I felt that the museum is over cluttered as certain artifacts of similar / same type are displayed repeatedly. Maybe for a diehard student of history / archeology the museum could be of interest but for an average tourist it is overwhelming . Further on the 3rd floor of the museum the caretakers are more interested in selling souvenirs and this becomes a bit irritating.It is my perception that certain artifacts in the museum are not genuine as the same have been put up for sale, which is quite surprising .I think the museum is over hyped. Visit it if free time is there but can be skipped.

While it is a little hard to find it is a great place to visit and very interesting. Give yourself at least an hour or more to visit

super collection of Keralan artifacts and fantastic house. Do not be put off by the journey time it is well worth 200 rupees return trip.

The Folklore Museum is made totally out of wood brought from various parts of India and constructed to make a wonderful museum. The artifacts were staggering (some were even on sale which we thought was a bit odd!). There was nothing to dislike.

A really good private museum.The entrance fee is quite expensive for India but it was really interesting & worth the effort.. You can even buy some artifacts here. Get to it by using the A/C airport bus from Fort Cochin.

You get a good feel of what kerala is for sure. For a Rs 100 entrance fee, you would expect to see atleast few words of explanation around all the exhibits but thats not the case. If you like to 'just' look at exhibits without interest in knowing further details..you may enjoy it. But a seasoned museum dweller may not exactly appreciate the randomly placed artefacts and especially incorrect information - i happened to notice a painting of oppanna a muslim dance form in the theatre where they claim the 60 tonne roof comprises only of paintings from ramayana mahabharata and bhagavadm.. Definitely lot of work to be done by the curators.

We stopped here as part of our private tour of Kochi. We were about toured out but decided to go in for a quick look. It was actually far more interesting than expected. Not necessarily easy to systematically understand the local culture, but bits and pieces were certainly interesting. overall gave us a feeling of what Kerala was about.

We visited just by chance and were glad we did. The museum is the work of one family bringing together a strange mix of pieces from Keralan history ranging from 2000bc to the twentieth century. Despite the large building its quite full of stuff and there isn't much interpretation. However the quality and charm of the artefacts surpasses that and makes it an interesting visit.I see people on here complaining about the 200 Rs entry fee, but get a grip people. That's less than the cost of a Starbucks coffee in the UK. And, yes, there is a shop section selling surplus items and new stuff, but much of what was on sale was interesting and good quality... And nobody can force you to buy it!

If you are around Kochi, visiting the folklore museum is almost a must. Large and very nice collection of ancien art from Kerala.

It is said "First Impression is the last impression"our 1st day (27dec 2014) and 1st tourist spot in Cochin was this Museum,the building it self is a architechchral marvel,it has three floors depicting the yesteryears life of Kerla through Art and Artifects,very nice and rich collection,there 3rd floor is a stage for performing arts,but some how we missed the Kathakali Show,it is a must for one who loves art and culture.

The museum is the altruistic work of a single family who invested money, energy, good taste and imagination to bring together the most interesting testimonies of every day cultural life in Kerala. Do not expect to see a scientifically structured collection of pieces of art of highest artistic quality, but rather a humorous and lovely way to look at the tradition and the cultural past of Kerala. I was lucky enough to enjoy a Kathakali performance in the theatre on the upper floor of the museum and was very impressed by the beauty of the cosutmes, the expressive body language of the artists and by the reaction of the Indian audience. Tradition is here still vivid and this precisely is the charm of this unique museum. I highly recommend anyone to visit it!

We were amazed to see the collection of so many artifacts and art related items at one place. The building itself is worth the visit.
