We really wanted a laid back break from our resort in Bayahibe. We had heard of Altos de Chavon and wanted to check it out. We talked with concierge at our hotel and they arranged for a taxi to take us, wait for two hours & bring us home. Gas prices in Dominican right now are expensive ... so the taxi was $70 but keep in mind that he waited 2 hours for us as well. To get to the villiage, you have to enter Casa de Campo (a Cuban-American ritzy resort area) which can cost up to $25/person. Our concierge sent an email in advance so we only paid $5/person. So for $80, my hubby and I explored Altos de Chavon and thought it was VERY worth it. We took lots of amazing photos, had a couple beer at a cantina, a snack, toured art galleries ... just a really cool experience. We went in the afternoon but would recommend going over lunch ... tour for an hour, have lunch & then tour some more ... I think 3 hours would probably be best if you decided to eat there. Anyhow ... we really enjoyed it and would recommend it to others. :)
Worth it combined with La Saona but because we got to go through Casa del Campo Resort :-) Make sure to use the full day
– Located in La Romana and Casa de Campo, it was the designed a s a recreation of a European Midieval village, the imaginations of Robert Copa and Charles Bluhdon . Opening in 1982 with a concert by Frank Sinatra is the Amphitheatre which still hosts concerts of famous talents today. The quaintness of this small town remains in your memory and one can not help but feel relaxed.
Place which look like European XVI centure's village. You can see amazing view on the river. A lot of flowers of all kind. Sunny amphitheater in Greek style in the heart of green area. There is a fountain of desires and church where Michael Jackson married.
This is, in my opinion, the best attraction to see in La Romana, Dominican Republic. It was built in the 1970's by a Hollywood movie mogul as a reproduction of a Mediterranean village and it is very authentic. Although it is an artificial world, it's current use, especially the archeological museum and the art galleries with works by students enrolled in the Parson's affiliated art school, make it not only beautiful but useful and relevant. We toured it on a Carnival Cruise excursion, therefore did not make use of the wonderful looking restaurants. The views are fantastic. Our Carnival guide was typically looking for commissions from the chocolate museum and the amber store and gave a big pitch for his tip, but other than his annoying behavior the tour was great. Rather than just a shuttle, I would recommend a guide, although perhaps a local tour rather than a ship excursion. It is too easy to miss the highlights with no guide at all.
Nexus tour fabulous. Variety to see many sights and so interesting!Tour guide wonderful!I would say this tour worth the cost in every way!
Very nice view of the river of Chavon from movies like Anaconda,RamboThey have lots of nice places to see around and then get cozy on a nice bar with view at that river.
Nice village with scenic view of the Chavon river. Little church - Michael Jackson married here.Great little restaurants with outside seating.
The village of Altos de Chavon was so beautiful and exotic. There really aren't any other words for it. Definitely worth checking out. Lots of interesting history about it, too. The tour guides were very informative and it was appropriately priced. We really enjoyed our visit there.
Amazed by the accuracy and detail of the architecture. Truly felt like I was walking thru a 16th century Spanish village
Overlooking the Rio Chavon, this reconstruction of an Italian medieval village is a bit bizarre at first - especially as it was very quiet when we visited. In fact, it was a bit like wandering onto a film set of a 1970s programme. The well maintained gardens lead to this charming tourist spot. With interesting museum, quaint church , little shops, street art and situated dramatically high on the cliffs over the Rio (river) Chavon, and with large birds of prey overhead, this was a lovely afternoon out. Good cafe, as well, and with ample parking this was a special day out in the cooling breezes of the village.
To get to this beautiful village, you need to pass through hotel Casa De Campo. You arrive at the gate, you to go their welcome center and show your ID. If you do not have ID, you will be turned away. It is about a 10-15 minutes ride to the village. I forgot the entrance fee but it would be worth it. We took a taxi however you should arrange to be picked up because it seem impossible to get one to return to your hotel. Beautiful, quiet village. Feels as though you are in Europe. Take your time, admire the architectures, stay for dinner, have ice cream. It was a very nice way to spend an afternoon. Great for couples.
We have been staying at Casa de Campo and it's a very short drive to Altos de Chavon village. We were very disappointed with the resort food. We were excited to have the best views and our best meal of the week at The Club at Altos de Chavon! Beautiful river views and excellent service.
So unusual place - a river that flow into Atlantic Ocean and you see it how it is, old town of artists on the top of a green hill... really leaves unforgettable feeling...
The views of the Chavon River below and the lush vegetation are awesome. The village itself is wonderful. It is so pretty. The architecture is very nice. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie were married in the church there, which is quaint and quite lovely. Watch out for the cobblestones. I was pushing someone in a wheelchair and found the place not at all wheelchair friendly.
