We've snorkels there through Taino Divers on our last trip. It was there that we got the bug to Scuba Dive after watching the divers go down deep while we watched from up top with our snorkels. Now we're certified divers and plan to dive Desecheo before we return home.
We did a snorkel / dive trip out there today and the water clarity was impressive. The dive was incredible. They took us to the "crab shack" area and omg. My family dives and loves Belize. But this might have beat it.
if you are on the west side of puerto rico i highly recommend you try scuba diving at desecheo island.
If you dive this us a good 30 minute ride on a dive boat but it's worth it. Unexplored with beautiful under world live. During some months you can see whales as well.
been going to Desecheo to dive there for many years.have yet to have a bad dive. the only issue is that sometimes the crossing(either going or coming back or both)can get a bit rough. other than that it's a great place to dive.
We went scuba diving and snorkeling with Taino Divers. The two dive sites were Candyland and the Caves. The reef there is relatively healthy, though bleached. The marine life is not that abundant. The water temperature was 80-83 F and the visibility at Candyland was more than 50 feet. There is a channel the boat has to go through to reach the island and the ride could be choppy. The boat ride is more than an hour each way. It's nice to visit if you are already in the area, but I wouldn't recommend going on a dive trip there.
Desecheo Island is only for snorkeling and scuba diving. You can't get off on the island. It is a marine reserve so there is lots to see and the water is crystal clear blue.
Two awesome dive sites if the weather is nice enough to make the trip from Rincon. We had calm seas and very clear day/excellent visibility. Even so, the return back was quite choppy but not frightening.
Warm (82 degrees)100 feet crystal-clear visibility with abundant marine life, including shark and huge barracuda (really huge!) and colorful coral formations. Underwater arches, caves, holes and canyons...stunning diving site.
The water is such a deep blue turquoise! BEAUTIFUL! There were fish in abundance and so much life to see! It's also cool to know that nobody can step foot on the protected land! From what we were told, only monkey's live here :)
Great for wedding!!! Rincon is located on the west coast of the Beautiful Island of Puerto Rico, this is a real paradise!! You don't need to go so far to be in a magical place!!!
SUMMARY: Desecheo Island is a beautiful, if limited dive site, but it can be extremely dangerous. This is no place for novice divers.TITLE: Beautiful, but Dangerous Tripadvisor 13 Mar 2014GENERAL: I have been horrified to learn that 3 or 4 dive shops on the NW coast are taking novice divers to Desecheo Island. Some of these divers have contacted me for advice. I told them not to go. They went anyway and were lucky. The dive shops will kill someone.DESCRIPTION: Big rock in the Mona Passage relatively close to Puerto Rico. Usually diving is on the protected south side. Subject to sudden, very strong oceanic currents. There is a narrow slope in drivable depth. Not much coral development, but lots of fishes. There are some shallow caves under the island, but usually each has a resident giant Green Moray. For fish watchers, Cottonwicks and Creolefish are common here and rare on the main island.RECOMMENDATIONS: [A] Always go hand-by-hand down the anchor line and always return hand-by-hand up the anchor line. [B] Have a tag line trailing behind the boat.HISTORY: [A] I have been diving at Desecheo when there as a strong current running 1 direction at the surface, another 1 in a different direction in mid-water, and a 3rd 1 in a different direction on the bottom. [B] Some fellow pirates reported coming up from a night dive at Desecheo. A sudden strong current (+1 knot) hit them and all they could do was hold on to the anchor line until it quit. [1] [C] An organization with the best-trained, best equipped, most experienced, and with the most safety requirements and precautions of any divers in the world [2] have gotten in trouble at Desecheo. If it can happen to them, it can happen to you. [D] My favorite Pirate and Captain of many of my voyages, Uchee, used to go out to Desecheo salvage all the outboard motors from sunken boats and sell them back to their owners. It is a treacherous place even for locals.FOOTNOTES[1] A diver cannot swim against a current of more than 1 knot.[2] I refuse to embarrass them by identification. I have great admiration for their work and sacrifices.Cottonwick, Haemulon melanurumCreolefish, Paranthirus furcifer
