I'm sure people are disappointed that the flamingos are usually viewable only from a distance. I have been close to them only twice in all the years I've been going to Anegada. Once was when they flew over which was amazing, and once we actually got fairly close to them on the other side of the island. These flamingos are very shy and don't want to be close to you. They will move if they see or hear you. And, you are not allowed to take any kind of boat out on the salt ponds. My husband saw them a couple of times last month out on the reef while he was fishing. But, you never know when they will be there. And, as soon as they know people are close they start spreading the alarm and moving. So, like others say, take your binoculars and be happy with that. There are other places in the world where you can get closer.I don't seek them out anymore, I look for them when going over the bridge and am always happy to see they are still there.
The flamingo pond is a large part of the interior of Anegada, and the flamingos are hard to see, so bring binoculars if you want to see them well. We saw them in the far distance off the bridge (as everyone does). We had a truck and tried to get to the other side of the pond to see them closer up, but never found them.
When we were on the way to the Loblolly beach we drove nearby the flamingos. Unfortunately they were not close the road, but we saw them and it was really cool to see them. With the friendly taxi driver he didn't mind stop for a while so we could see the flamingos. I hope you also stop for a while to see the pink and fabulous flamingos if you are visiting the island.
It was extremely difficult to get anywhere near the flamingos. We actually got very close to them on the south bay during a fishing excursion.
It is a very big pond, but the flamingos are very far away. You can see from the road their pink color, but never get close to them.
We did find the flamingos the first time we visited Anegada but had no luck this time. Take binoculars and there is a lot of bird life to see anyway .... ask locals where the flamingos are before you head out, that is a great clue to start your search. Beautiful to watch if you do see them.
Look across the green and blue salt pond to see a stripe of coral color - those are the flamingos. So exotic and mysterious - would have been nice to get closer but the birds are easily disturbed. As we sat on the road watching, not a car drove by, and the only sound was the waves crashing on the north shore beaches. Beautiful and mysterious!
Flamingos were there. It was quite a sight. This is a must see in my book. Pack your binoculars.
