Kervin and staff will treat you to samples of rum or wine, answer your questions, in a kindly manner, and give a tour, if you can spare the time. We never miss an opportunity, to stop by for a taste, and a come away with a few goodies. Thankyou, until next season, Susie and Heinz
For what it is, why not make it a more historical destination? What did slavery really cost people, in terms of human efforts to produce the rum? Etc.
Visited Callwood Distillery a few years back when i visited Cane Garden Bay while sailing in the BVI. A short walk from the harbor, at the time completely undeveloped area. Rum samples were great, purchased a couple of bottles, which I savor red for several years. The best part was seeing the elderly man in the hammock near the entrance, and the old hound asleep below him. Will return on my next sailing adventure in the BVI!
We were on the beach when told by the local taxi driver about a small family run distillary at the end of the beach, 4 tastings for a dollar! Can't be bad we thought! The family that run it were so much fun, Matt and Mark we assume were the owners sons...? kept refilling our glass for just the one dollar for 4 shots of rum. Would thoroughly recommend the Panty Dropper....!!! Seriously, it made our group drop theirs! Lol ... Just so much fun and do not expect to leave very sober he he!!
We were there in February of 2015 and the distillery was not in production. The rum making process begins in March. Maybe if you go during that time, it will be more of something to visit. During the down time a visit to the distillery is very very quick. From the outside ou can look at a very old and very picturesque small building. You can talk to the person selling rum about the process. You can walk into the one room that is open and look around. That's about it. 15 minutes if you stretch it out. If you are staying in Cane Garden Bay, by all means go check it out.
Interesting side trip from Cane Garden Bay. Short informative rum-tasting from a Callwood family member. Interesting to hear about their distilling history. Barely took 10 minutes (tasted 4 different rums for $1 per person). Worth a visit.
Fairly easy to find off the main road running through Cane Garden Bay, this rustic and historic distillery should be on everyones list when visiting Tortola. The staff is friendly and informative and the Rum is not bad either!
Took a safari taxi from Roadtown and stopped here on the way to the beach to taste the rum. Interesting Little place with friendly staff. Worth a stop.
This place was fun to stop and do a rum tasting. Unique flavors made this a treat! The prices were very reasonable and the people working here were super friendly. Just stop by quick next time you're in Cane Garden Bay!
This place was great! Stopped off here in a big family group on the way to the beach. We were able to taste four different rums for $1.00, and then bought our favourite. We ended up buying 3 bottles! Staff were fun and knowledgeable, and this was a memorable stop on our visit to the Caribbean.
At first we were apathic when we first walked to the distillery, because it looks like ruin. But rum produced there is great - (they have many varietes) but the one I have tried was strong and mild at the same time! What was little dissapointing, the distillery offerred a "tour" for I do not remember well, let's say few dollars. However the tour consisted of seeing the only one room and providing few information about the distillery and its history. It wasn't really a tour.
hired a safari taxi in Road Town and this was a stop on the tour, fun and interesting. Tried 4 shots for a dollar and bought a bottle of the Pa*** D*** which is very smooth.
Visited while on the Celebrity Summit. Although the rum was free, the quality was not as good as Puerto Rico. When I visited they were maintaining the distillery and we could not taste more than 3 rum drinks.
I actually found this distillery to be charming and very interesting. Of course, I purchased some rum but I never drank it (its more of a souvenir to me) so I cannot attest to the taste but I'm sure its wonderful. This is worth the stop to get away from the monotony of the beaches and crowds.
The Callwood Family has more than 200 years experience in running this Caribbean distillery. We purchase two bottles of Arundel Cane Rum, Yummy, tasting rum!
