On the last day I spent in Tobermory, I went to big tub light house. The water was such a clear shade of blue. The rocks made it easier to get to the water. Beware because their are rattle snakes in the forest path.
Love stopping in at the Big Tub Lighthouse. Parking can be a challenge in busy months but be patient and you'll love visiting this area. Pack a lunch and hang out, dive in and cool off. Bootlegger's Cove is just down the street. Make sure to chat with other visitors, many come from far away to visit here so it's always great to chat and share stories.
Easy to drive to and good access to view the lighthouse and bay. Cannot go inside the lighthouse but view outside worth the short trip from Tobermory
Accessible by car, or boat, the first light in Tobermory (a lamp on a tree) was established in 1881 and was later replaced by the current lighthouse still guarding the entrance to Big Tub Harbour in 1885. The six-sided, 43-foot-tall, wooden tower narrows slightly as it rises and is graced by rectangular windows, each bordered by red overhangs. At the top of the light house is a red steel railing protecting the walkway around the six-sided lantern room. The large, square panes that entirely glaze the room allow the red modern-day beacon to be seen from all directions. A great spot to take photos, so bring your camera with you.The rock formation around the light house can be a little tricky, so where good walking shoe.God Bless.
The hard part is finding a suitable place to park your car and launch your kayak but it's not that bad once you do (only reason why I scored a bit lower). Not long of paddle to the right of the lighthouse (if looking towards water) to get to the sunken ships. Crystal clear blue water is great for observing them. Just remember those large tour ships have the right of way. Lots of great bird watching and the rocks behind the lighthouse are great for sun bathing.
We visited the Big tub lighthouse. Was easy to get to. Walkway were accessable. A lot of rock nearby, but it was easy to maneuver around Nice to read a little history about the lighthouse. I recommend everyone to see it.
You can walk right down to the water's edge and get good views of Big Tub and the ferry dock. This is also a great spot to watch the ferry come into Tobermory.
Nothing special about this lighthouse. A bit small but its nice to see especially if you see lighthouses very often. You get a decent from the surrounding area. Perfect place to make a first stop after a long drive up the peninsula. There's a couple of benches you have can have a seat at and relax. Enjoy the view and breathe in that lovely fresh air. Unfortunately it was very rainy when i was there so i just snapped a couple pictures and left.
Cute traditional lighthouse, loved it. I enjoyed taking pictures of it and a couple artists were there painting/drawing it. Easy to walk to from town.
Was really beautiful with the mist in the morning & absolutely gorgeous sunsets. You can get easy access to even walk around the light house.
It's great that this lighthouse is preserved. And it's a beautiful old lighthouse. Visiting the site, however, it's on a point of pretty barren rocks. You don't have to leave too long for the visit.
It is a small lighthouse which is a short drive from the town. You can sit and relax and enjoy the breeze and the view of the bay.
A short drive from town gives you access to a beautiful view, along the rocky shore, of Lake Huron. The picturesque lighthouse is obviously great for photos but unfortunately you cannot access the building. There are a few benches for relaxing and lots of flat rocks for walking on/sitting. Not a huge area (surrounded by cottages with private property) so it does get busy but it would be nice to bring a small picnic and eat by the beautiful water.
My god what a place, everytime I remember big tub area it will give me refreshing feeling. If u are visiting tobermory and not visiting big tub then u did not visit tobermory at all. It is an outstandingly beautiful with lovely view.
This is well worth a visit. It's a beautiful old lighthouse in a beautiful setting - right on the shoreline, a few minutes from some amazing ship wrecks which are clearly seen from the surface of the water. Take a camera and a picnic - it's a lovely place to see.
