Great experience if you're not scared of heights and even if you are, once you get going, you have so much fun that you forget you are sometimes 20m above the ground and flying through the air. Will definitely recommend to anyone who visits this area
I really enjoyed this walk, even though I live quite close to the Kinglake National Park, so cool climate rainforests are not exactly a novelty. The trail leading to the start of the treetop walk is an easy downhill walk and well signposted along the way with interesting facts about the flora and fauna. I have a moderate fear of heights, but felt quite safe walking along the platforms with their sturdy safety rails. I even braved the tower with its narrow spiral staircase. There's quite a view from up there, but it does sway noticeably, so if you're a bit nervous, it might not be for you. I avoided the cantilever, however - I'm not that brave. The tall mountain ash are impressive, and there's a huge range of plants, including epiphytic ferns (the ones that grow on trees), mosses and what looks like a carpet of tree ferns under your feet. The fauna was hiding whilst I was there though - only a few small birds showed themselves. I had hoped to spot a tree frog or one of the more exotic birds, but no such luck.I thought the $25 cost was about average for this type of attraction. I've certainly paid more for less impressive tourist attractions overseas. As others have noted, it's a bit of a walk to the visitor centre from the car park, but it's more or less flat and a well maintained gravel path, so not exactly a hardship. There is a disabled car park close to the visitor centre, but if you have difficulty just walking from the car park, you're probably not going to be doing the treetop walk anyway. The return walk to the visitor centre, which is uphill, was more strenuous than I expected it to be. You'll either need a reasonable level of fitness, or allow extra time and stop and rest on the benches provided along the track. The cafe was OK - about what I'd expect at a tourist attraction. Not bad, but nothing memorable either. Go for the walk and have lunch elsewhere.
We would have given this 5 stars but the price is far too high. So if you don't mind much for the cost, go ahead and do it. But if you are on a budget, you perhaps instead want to do mains rest walk, which is free and similar, apart from you walk on the ground floor of the forest as opposed to up in the treen tops
Get tickets in advance to obtain discounts from visitor centres. As other reviews state it can take 90 minutes from Apollo Bay to get there using winding roads so plan ahead. It's an excellent day out but if you are scared of heights it wont be for you. The steel walk ways are very high and although the views are spectacular it can be a little nervy. However it only seemed to bother me and one or two others. The walk back to the main centre from the end of the tree top walk is up hill and you should give yourself a bout 15 - 20 minutes. A golf buggy does tour around and you may be lucky to get a lift.
whether you approach from Lorne or Apollo Bay as we did it takes a while, an hour and one half probably, to get there. You should also be aware that route 159 is VERY twisty, filled with blind corners and NARROW. If you are still adjusting to driving on the left be extra cautious. The treetop walk is classic rain forest but with a nice wide path. While it is all down hill to the tower it is therefore all uphill on your return. There is however, a bench area that runs on the half hour to pick up those that cannot make the return trek. You can also flag down the little golf cart if you see them approach. The metal ramp is an amazing structure and provides a unique perspective to the forest. While it is very stable the cantilevered portion and the top of the tower have some natural movement especially when it is a it windy as it was when we were there. The climb to the top of the tower is quite open if you have a fear of heights and one woman was clearly unhappy with that but had a grim determination to get to the top.It has already been mentioned but purchasing your tickets at an information center saves you $5 a ticket.
We got the tickets at a discounted price ($20 each) at the visitor information centre in Lorne, and then drove up the mountain. It is around 1.5 hour drive from Lorne (depending on your speed)… which sounds okay but it felt ridiculously long on our way there, driving through the winding mountain roads, thinking "THIS BETTER BE GOOD".I must say the experience was worth the long drive! It was really cool walking so high top among the treetops, climbing up the tower, and standing on the suspension platform. What an unique experience, definitely recommended for those who love the nature.I noticed that they provide shuttle service in the compound, for those who have difficulty getting to the treetop walk section (quite a distance and needs to climb up and down slopes). If you have no problems walking on flat surface, this treetop walk shouldn't be a problem.
His is my fourth visit to the Otway fly. The tree top walk is fabulous, could not recommend it more, to any visitor, wanting a real 'Australian' experience. But the cafe...Really, what are you on!?It was quiet, not many visitors....Nearly ten minutes to order a cup of tea.....Three staff members attending to one customer, whilst a lot of us waited patiently in a queue ....Then, the tea......Ordered for two, got one cup and were asked if we wanted another.....Tea strainer, not to fir the teapot, so when you poured the tea, you ended up with a cup full of tea leaves....Need to rethink things here, not what we would expect.
We've been wanting to visit the Otway fly for a long time and very pleased we did it today. We got our tickets on sale thru the RACV, worthwhile doing! We paid $30 for 2 of us. This enabled us to walk on the walkways among the treetops, and its a great experience! The views are spectacular, as the different vegetation of the area and it gives you a real sense of just how big and tall the trees are! We did not do the zip line. The cost for this $120 each!! Allow around 1 to 2 hours to do it all leisurely. Wear comfortable walking shoes, take a rain jacket (we wore ours all the time), it rains every second day there. We took a pic-nic lunch and they allowed us to take it inside the cafe visitors centre and eat it there in table and chairs, a big area and comfortable seating with great views. The toilets were clean. There is a souvenir shop in case you want to purchase a souvenir.
We only did the treetop walk but saw lots of people looking as if they were having great fun on the zip line too. $25 each to do the walk is verging on too expensive, but we did want to do it so paid anyway. The trek to the start of the treetop walk took around 20 minutes through rainforest type fauna and there were the sounds of lots of birds but not too much to see. Once we got to the walkway it took us a good half an hour to walk with short pauses for photos, you can add another ten minutes if you climb the tower which is another 45 meters up in the air. It does move quite a lot once you are up there but the railings are high enough to make you feel secure. If you are afraid of heights it may take a little courage to do this but it is worth feeling the sun on your face once you get to the top. There is a cantilever part to the walkway just after the tower that you can choose to do, this really does move as it is of course not secured at the end, needless to say I didn't do that part but my husband did and lives to tell the tale! Once off the walkway at the end there is a quite challenging walk back to the visitor center as the whole way is up hill, quite steep in some places. There are seats where you can sit down but I do recommend that you take water and allow yourselves more than the hour that the young, fit members of staff tell you it will take from start to finish. If you want to stop and at least enjoy the view and take a few photos and get back to the center without having to march at speed allow yourself two hours for this attraction, especially as it also takes ten minutes to walk from and to the car park. If you are lucky enough to find a discount leaflet as we were in our motel, be aware that you will need one leaflet per person to get the discount for each of you. I find this a little annoying and a waste of paper too but the girl behind the desk was not to be swayed on the point!
We were happy just to do the TreeTop walk especially considering the price of the zip line, which is way over priced in my opinion. Having said that the Tree Top walk was really good and gives a different perspective of the rain forest. Again, for what it is I think it is a bit overpriced. If your not set on doing the tree top walk or zipline and just want to see and experience the rainforest I would suggest driving a further 3km up the road to Triple Falls. A bit of dirt road to negotiate but well worth it, and free.
Really long walk from car park to visitor centre. Long walk to tree top walk. That was awesome apart from the idiots who decided to scare the kids by bouncing on the canter lever. The website advertises the prehistoric walk and our young kids were excited. We looked for the dinosaurs, checked the map we were given but could find no evidence of them. Take them off the website if they are no longer there it only leads to kids disappointment. Have been to the tree top walk in Tasmania. It was set up much better.
If you're looking for a quiet walk through the Otways this is NOT it! Admitedly it was school holiday time but I found the track quite crowded and noisy. Apart from this though, the scenery was great and it was a nice experience to walk above the tree tops. My other concern (as a photographer) was that the safety barriers, which I understand are absolutely necessary, impedied any great images. I am 5 foot 1 but could not get the lens above the railings.
If you are looking for a thrill this is not it. $114 and 25 extra for photos....have tried other zip lines and this is by far the least exciting.
