We visited Maldon on a whim and had a wonderful time! An Old and charming Main Street in the bush. We enjoyed lunch at the Kangaroo hotel and rifled through antique and vintage stores. Couldn't believe we hadn't heard of it before. Definitely worth a visit.
This was our first time in maldon and would have loved to have spent some more time exploring all the different shops. The overall look and feel of the street is like you have taken a step back in time. I could imagine to some it would look like a movie set. Worth a few hours just for walking around.
Take the time to walk around the streets , there are some lovely old houses full of history. The shops in the main drag certainly have some story's to tell. We lost count of the old shops that were once old hotel.Maldon certainly maintains it's county feel, with friendly locals and quiet places to explore. You will find plenty to do for a weekend trip.
We love the old world buildings in Maldon, there is a lot of historical buildings in Maldon, we also went up to the top of Mount Tarrangower to overlook the town and district which is the geographic centre of Victoria
A casual stroll up Main Street, and the connecting High Street, in Maldon is a trip into the rich history of the halcyon days of the 1800s Victorian gold rush era. Whilst some of the original stores are looking a little neglected, others have been beautifully restored, but in both cases it is not difficult to imagine your way back in time 150 or so years. The wall of the Maldon Hotel bistro has an enormous 4-panel photo of the early Maldon township, in which is it possible to see many of the significant buildings still existing today. To some extent it is important to see the original historical buildings before it is too late as many restorations maintain the integrity of the building, but the nature of the business operating in them is quite different. Apart from the beautiful old buildings, there is plenty of shopping in the various gift and antique shops and refreshments in the cafes and hotels (although not as many hotels as when Maldon had a population of 30,000 thirsty gold diggers!). If travelling to Castlemaine or Bendigo, take the time to travel to Maldon (its only about 15 minutes from Castlemaine), and stroll through an unchanged part of the goldfields history.
Good trekking up and down the streets of Castlemaine with its historic buildings, fretwork and stonework. Some lovely vintage and dress shops with excellent cafe's and food within walking distance of most B and B's
Different this is an historic town and the shops, cafes, antique & brick n brack are plenty and worth looking at
We loved the authentic old charm of Maldon - wandering around the Main Street and enjoying a coffee and yummy sausage roll at the gold exchange. Maldon was alive the day we were there as the annual garage sales were on as well as a display of old hot rods in the school grounds. Well done to the community of Maldon!
We took a day driving from Melbourne to Bendigo via Clunes, Talbot, Maryborough and Maldon (left at 0730 arrived at 1630). Each town is quiet and small, and worth a 60-90 minute stop to wander around the beautiful historic and heritage buildings plus time for coffee, lunch or shopping. Maldon's main street does not disappoint and all places of interest are within easy walking distance. Information Office was very helpful. If you have more time there are return steam trains on Sundays to Castlemaine which take 45 minutes (more services during the summer - check timetables). Castlemaine is another great place to spend sometime and again everything within easy walking distance. Thanks for the vote if you found this helpful. Happy travels.
Still a lot of the old buildings being used makes Maldon a very pleasant place to visit. The service station is a classic old style garage with the fuel pumps on the kerb and an attendant that comes out to serve you. We purchased fuel there for the boat and it wasn't any more expensive than it was in Bendigo. The home made ice cream shop has excellent ice cream. I can recommend trying the Bailies Irish Coffee.
Maldon is a great little town, with a delightful main street. I should know, I live there. AS an old gold mining town, a large amount of the heritage has been kept in buildings that line Main St and High St. But don’t expect that the town is going to full of dusty shops selling trinkets from the gold mining days, like some tacky theme-park.Instead the streets are lined with cosmopolitan shops selling up-market homewares, freshly grown local and sourced foods, exotic home interiors from abroad and an eclectic array of everything in between. The food choices are great for such a small town, regardless of whether you are looking to eat out or cook your own, there is a number of good quality clothing stores, art galleries, antique stores, something dedicated to the sweet tooth in all of us and the local staples of a news agency and chemist as well. The original facades of many of the building are original, it’s nice and compact, so think of it more as a stroll than a hike, and yet you will easily find that a leisurely afternoon has passed without you even noticing. One of the best things though, is that as a resident of the town I can get everything that I need on a daily basis without having to travel to another town, and yet it keeps it local charm by staying small town in its feel.
Like a pop-up folk museum, the whole of Maldon is a well preserved relic of the gold rush era, with lovely fine buildings built from local stone . Its a working town not an amusement park with tourists packing the streets on week-ends,but remains in a state of sleepy self, when we visited mid week. Two streets and you have covered museums, antique shops, toy stores, lolly boutiques, bookshops, cafes and grand pubs. Lovely strolling town. We drove to Mt. Tarrengower to enjoy the panoramic views from the lookout. Loved the ride on the beautifully restored steam tram through the Muckleford forest to Castlemain.
Fantastic town that has been locked in time. Well worth the look at with some great shops. The awnings make it easy to visit the town no matter what the weather is like. Almost all of the buildings could be in sovernhill or some history setting. It's a wonder movies are not made here.
Didnt have long as we had to catch the steam train on its return trip but would like to go back for another look. Very clean and tidy town, lost of quaint little shops and a mix of pubs for meals and coffee shops.
Had a great time shopping in Bendio. The layout was great. You could park and walk around the shops. All the shops I visited I was welcomed in and spoken to with a very friendly manor. I also got some good bargains and had a great lunch as a bonus.
