Two turbines sit majestically on the cliffs above the Southern Ocean near the mouth of the Wilson Inlet. Surprisingly controversial during the planning phase, they now benefit from the reliable ocean breezes that buffet this coast. At the end of Ocean Beach Road, if you continue on the unsealed extension there is room to park at the access gate to the wind farm. It is an easy walk on the well made gravel service road up to the towers. This coastal scrubland is very hard to negotiate in its virgin state so the wind farm access has given a lot of people a way of getting up to this great vantage point. There is a planned cycle/walk path along the top of the cliffs towards Lights Beach which will be brilliant but in Dec 14 there is no sign of construction actually starting. All the electrics have been put underground so the turbines stand like lone sentinals visible from up and down the coast. They generate enough electricity for about half the needs of the town. My only complaint? There should be many more along the same ridge.
