I can not understand why people in the city warned us to go here. And I also read about the area as 'slum'. I guess people have different views of what slum is... We took bus 124 from centro and got off at Cuba street. Then hailed a cab and got all the way up for 3$. Very tranquil, nicely moved lawns, museum closed (open 10-18 Wed-Sun) but well worth the trip. No city noise, fresh breeze from the river and not so much people. We walked down trough the 'slum' which is actually normal peoples homes, talked to a few and got on the bus again back to centro. No harm done to me even if I look like a gringo...

The Fort is well worth a visit with good history in the Museum and the views over Montevideo are great. The only problem is getting there which may put off some people off but persevere.

Go by bus, take a walk and you will get the sense of a place in Montevideo that is out of the touristic circuit. Make sure to watch the sunset but avoid get back after dark.

Take that title literally. Uruguay is rather flat and low so even though the fort is only on a low hill it is certainly the highest point in the area. The problem with visiting the fort is that you probably need your own vehicle to do it. The area around the fort is partly slums and my wife who is Uruguayan is very wary of being in such areas. Plan your route and go straight to the fort. They supposedly have an entry fee, about 20 pesos (US$1) from memory but the last time I went there was no-one there to collect it. The interior rooms have an interesting collection of uniforms and armaments from down the ages. One time when the weather was good we had a picnic on the lawns to one side of the fort. Again, my wife was not comfortable because of the proximity to the slums further down the hill. I guess I am a bit more laid back when it comes to things like that. All in all a nice way to spend a couple of hours if you have access to a vehicle.

We got a taxi out to the fort and the views from it are magnificent. There is a tiny entrance fee but the views are more than worth it!The soldiers working there arranged for another taxi to come and collect us and bring us back to the city.

The view is what drew me to the Fort. Everything is in Spanish in the Fort. The Fort is one of many that were built to defend the coast line. After telling someone that I drove there and wandered around the fort by myself, they said I was crazy. The Fort is located in one of the worse neighborhoods in the city. So, be forewarned and be aware. Combine this with are park near the beach and a cold beer at the Golf course.

When someone goes to Uruguay has the idea that it's one of the best places for living: small, calm, without poverty and son on. And I completely agree it's a wonderful country. However it's also good to know that as a normal country it has also some no that nice places and La Fortaleza has a nice view of all this. I would recommend to go there by walking after the last stop of the bus. Then you can check how the real life is. Most of young people used to live there and while getting older moved to the centre, but still it's a good place to discover! and trust me it's not that dangerous. In fact, it's nice after all to see those normal houses and people.

Nice view but watch out, it is located in one of the worst neighbourhoods of Montevideo. If you go during the day, during week ends, by car, nothing should happen. I just do not recommend to go there anyhow... may be I am paranoid, never happen anything to me there, but the location is one of the worst, so why gamble?

It is located in the outskirts of Montevideo, about half an hour car ride far. But fair value. You won't have figured out the city and its development alongshore Río dela Plata without going there and taking a look.

This is a colonial fortress which is is perfect condition and from there you can see all the bay and port of Montevideo and understand its importance. There is also a lighthouse. One of the typical sights of Montevideo.

Interesting to see all the old canons and guns and get some perspective of the history surrounding this city. Probably also worth a visit to take in the views as it is located on a hill. We were warned that there are slums nearby and petty theft is a problem there.
