My wife and I were visiting our son during his fall semester abroad in Montevideo, and wanted to do something not tied to Uruguay’s cities and fantastic beaches. Lucie and Santiago’s ranch and the community they live in, are an extraordinary example of a hidden gem! We spent one day with them - way too short in retrospect – and it was certainly the highlight of our time in Uruguay. Neither of us are experienced riders, and both of our horses were wonderful matches for us. The 3+ hour ride was just a blast! The horses were wonderful, the country is magnificent in its beauty and variety, the weather in late October was hot (but not too hot!). The food was delicious and plentiful, including a risotto with fava beans and asparagus from their garden – and the eggs, honey, olives harvested in the community were all exceptional.Lucie and Santiago were away when we visited, and Anais and her husband Hugo were running the ranch. I can’t imagine more gracious hosts or more attentive, expert guides. We loved our time with both of them!Just the best day ever.
Don't miss out the chance to ride with the enchanting horse whisperer Lucie and her husband Santi through the stunning Sierras de Rocha in Uruguay. Beautiful gentle horses with great responses.
My husband and I spent five nights at Caballos de Luz as a part of our first trip to South America. We heard fantastic things about La rocha beaches but ended up spending all of our time in the rocha area at this peaceful place. We did not miss the beach one bit. We stayed in the dome, a really cool structure off the main house by a short walk. We had privacy whenever we wanted yet we felt included in the family. The outhouse was nearby and had enough hot water to meet our needs. The vegetarian food was amazing and freshly prepared. Lucie, Santi, Livia, and Eric all helped prepared the variety of food--from Indian to Thai to Italian. We loved the salad dressing so much that we continue to make it since returning home. We miss the freshly made yogurt and homemade granola. As we are novices when it comes to horseback riding, our goals were to feel more comfortable around and on horses. Lucie, Livia, and Santi were all wonderful coaches and teachers. We never felt like we were in over our heads and we came to love and respect the horses more than ever. We loved our daily rides in and around the property.Besides the horseback riding, we took walks, explored the community area, ran on the road by the property, relaxed on the hammocks and thoroughly decompressed. It was one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating vacation we've had. We hope to return some day soon.
In the safest country of Latin America you will find a nature paradise, where the hosts naturally enjoy what they do best: horseriding, vegetarian cooking and enjoying a simple and healthy life. We just spent a few days and it felt like weeks of vacation....The region has a lot to offer which is unknown to most of until we get there. Definitely to be recommended!
this really is a place you will remember as a highlight of your trip.owners will pick you up at the bus staiton if you dont have your own car.Go for horse riding, or to enjoy great vegetarian organic food, or just give yourself a treat to get away form busy hotels and noisy hostels for a couple of days
If I could take the time away from the "real world", I'd be convincing Lucie to let me stay for a few months. I actually came to Uruguay mainly to go on a horse trek here. Well worth it too.Lucie and her husband Santi are welcoming hosts who have a clear love for horses and their beautiful rural homestead. From the first minute you meet them, you feel at home. It is easy to get to Rocha by bus from Montevideo (about 3 hours) and after a short jeep drive into the mountains, you arrive at the ranch. My room had all the important amenities like electricity, flush toilet, hot water shower, small kitchenette with a propane burner to make coffee or tea, a comfortable bed and a stunning view of the mountains. The other guestroom is a little simpler but not lacking in the least and is separate from the main house. Meals were family style and delicious, vegetarian food from the garden or the neighbors gardens or dairies. Home baked bread, local ricotta cheese, Thai curries, pizza, gnocchi, salads, local wine - basically the best food I had in the country. The horses are what counts here. Lucie and Santi know their horses. They train with gentle methods, in the natural horsemanship style, and they have horses for every level. I'm not kidding when I say that a world class rider could come here and find a horse that is enjoyable and not boring in the least while someone who has only been on a pony ride at a fair could be introduced to a calm horse to show them the ropes. Western style tack, good for long rides over the countryside. Getting to try several of Lucie's more, um, lively and strong personality, horses was a delight and provided fun variety over the week.A nearly week long trek took us over mountains and farmland and rivers and valleys. Peaceful, quiet, scenic. For a small group of experienced riders, it was real freedom on a horse. Camping varied from fancy to rustic but was fully supported with quality tents and sleeping bags and the food far better than typical backcountry camping food. Prices were very reasonable for an all inclusive horse trip like this.
Long story short, this is the most incredible experience. Lucie and Santi are warm and welcoming people, the horses are great, the food is delicious: vegetarian and fresh, the guesthouse is amazing... If you are in Uruguay or Buenos Aires you must take 2 days (or more!!) to come here. They speak Spanish, English and German. It's also very reasonably priced. My experience could not have been better. Long story: I'm studying abroad in Buenos Aires and had a few days off from classes and wanted to get out of the city and spend some time with horses. I stumbled upon this place on google and then came to trip advisor to check it out, and seeing that it was so highly rated I decided to book a day with Caballos de Luz for myself and two friends. It was pretty last minute but Lucie responded to my emails very quickly and helped me figure out which buses to take. My friends and I had decided to do UN DÍA EN LAS SIERRAS (3-5 hours of horseback riding, three meals and an overnight stay) and we could not have been happier. Santi picked us up at the bus station and we arrived at their beautiful farm not long after and were shown to our guest house. The guest house is "rustic" in that it's a dry bottom toilet but has running water to shower, a mini kitchen, space to hang out, and the upstairs is a bedroom and a balcony which is perfect to watch the sunset. Santi brought us coffee shortly after we arrived. Lucie and Santi are the most amazing people, they were warm and welcoming and great company. Their food is to die for, all vegetarian and lots of fresh ingredients from their (or their neighbors) garden. We ate a pumpkin soup for lunch and a spicy pasta with vegetables for dinner. We got more than enough to eat. Meals were accompanied with great conversation. Lucie and Santi are very knowledgeable about the community they live in, the history of the area, the land, etc. After we ate lunch and rested (aka explored and lay in their hammock) it was time to go horseback riding! Our horses were chosen based on our ability levels, but all were well trained and sensitive to the commands given. We got to brush them and get to know them a little before Lucie tacked them up. After a brief demonstration of how to ride (for those in our party with little experience and a refresher for the rest of us) we mounted up and set off. Our group (just me and my two friends) had a wide range of ability levels, from beginner to advanced but we all thought the ride was amazing. I'm on the upper end of the riding ability scale and I loved my horse Boleto; he was very sensitive to the aids and well mannered, a dream to ride. Lucie led the way on her horse but it wasn't your typical "one horse follows the other" kind of trail ride. I was actually in control of my horse a good amount of the time I was side by side with Lucie. We stopped at various points for history or geography lessons, and Lucie was always willing to stop to take photos for us or to let us take photos. The scenery is breathtaking and I learned a lot about the area. We rode for a good 4 hours or so. After the ride I helped groom the horses down while my friends went to rest. Adding to our perfect day was a sunset of the most incredible hues and a rainbow. We took a nap afterwards and Lucie was kind enough to wake us up for dinner. We sat on wool rugs around the fire and shared the pasta, bread, fresh olives and were offered wine to compliment. While we ate Lucie and Santi were baking bread which we got to eat the next morning for breakfast. Though it was chilly outside there was no draft in our room and we were perfectly warm all night long. In the morning we got breakfast in our house, which consisted of the homemade bread (delicious), cheese, jam, yogurt, homemade granola, milk and we could have made tea if we wanted to. Then we had to leave; Santi drove us back to the bus station. We were very sad to go and would have stayed longer if we could have. We hugged Lucie and Santi goodbye with promises to return because it would be a shame not to. I will definitely be coming back here before I go back to the US. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough.
