You have to look hard for this museum. It presents an interesting aspect of looking at the animals that live in Ecuador. $2.00 gets you in to a rather musty room, full of skeletons. I would rate it higher, but it is somewhat neglected. But still worth a visit.
We tried valiantly to find this museum. We had a new map of attractions from the tourism office, which shows this museum. However, in the neighborhood, we asked close to a dozen people who lived or was working in the area, but no one knew it existed or did not know where it was.It was only by luck that we were wandering on the University of Cuenca campus (highly recommended) when we ran into some students. They were easily able to point us in the right direction. It is on the campus grounds. Actually, we had passed it twice, but the part of the building facing the street has no signage at all and the gates were locked. Reaching it by crossing the campus, there is a large sign on one wall. However, it was locked up. There is no information about the hours, however, my guess is that it is only open when the university is in session. They are on semester break now, so I am thinking this is why the museum is closed.
The place is very hard to find and wasn't open on our first visit but when went back there later to be greatly welcomed. The museum is very small and consist of 3 rooms where are well presented more than 120 squelettes. The information given for the visit is a great complement and you will learn a whole lot in 45 to 60 mins.Recommended!
THis was on the opposite side of the block from our hotel, and looked interesting, but it never seemed to be open. I went by 4 or 5 times during posted open hours, but never did get to see it. Too bad, it sounds very interesting.
If you are looking for somewhere that is quick and intriguing this is the place. It's small but the lady who was there made it more memorable and fun. I wish it was just a little bigger.
This place was recommanded in my french travel guide. I was able to find it with the address in hand, but it is very easy to pass thru, as the add at the entrance is small and difficult to spot in this busy street. Also, I am under the impression that the opening hours are not always respected, so it might be a good idea to verify in advance if the museum is open before you go. It was easy for me because it was very close to my hotel, but it took me 4 visits before the place was finally open to public. It was a well spent 2$ per person, even if the visit on itself does not last more than 25-30 minutes. The manager is the grandson of the original owner of the skeleton collection, and he gives good explanations and allows you to touch some of the specimens. Not something you can see everywhere, worth a visit.
Happened to stumble upon this little bone museum today. Because it was so small, $2/person seemed a little high. But it was very fascinating! We even had a little guidance through the place. The guy answered a few of our questions. It doesn't take long to see everything, but it was still pretty cool.
Mildly amusing and slightly macabre little museum of skeletons of native Ecuadorian fauna (+ a baby elephant).I'm a biologist, I found it interesting.$2 to get in - probably only a 20-30 minute visit though.
