This is a crowded beach with way too many boat motors, people, venders, kids, dogs and lack of bathroom facilities. Good place to watch people and party, but would NOT make it my swimming destination.
Attractive malecon that is safe and that has lots to offer. We were there during New Year's so it was packed full of people. It is much better when less crowded. However, it is great for walking and taking in the ocean and people watching. Lots of restaurants, bars, and cafes as well. The western end is nicer than the eastern end. Overall, quite nice.
We went there for three days and two nights. Nice people and great views. Study up on your restaurants ...., please! There are many "BAD" places to eat there...., and "FEW" really good ones. "Smokin BBQ" is one of the best. The owner and his wife are always there. And, great food at a great price..., and an unbelievable support staff and a great view of the water.
Fun place to people watch. Activity for watching be sure to look both on the beach side and the restaurant/shop side. Great for a stroll day and night.
Not typical of the Pacific coast beaches in Ecuador, this area is just big-city, tourist trap location. Very crowded, small, dirty beach. Only good if your looking for a resort type of hotel stay.
It is not as polished as Guayaquil, but better than many. It has many little individual bars that have limited food and many have chairs out on the sand. All offerings are reasonably priced and usually good.
We began our trip in Quito. It took is a good 9 hour road trip through a "highway" that is nothing like one . The road goes through small towns that if there was a real highway made that was cross country you should make it to the beach in half the time and in safer conditions !! Once reaching Salinas there are many choices for food and lodging . We rented an apartment for a week at $1500 for 5 . Weather is great this time of year and on new year's eve the fireworks display and the burning of the "año viejo " is a tradition never seen anywhere else.
Beautiful malecon, the locals are not too educated. Expecting that any local will know where anything is, even the cab drivers, is a tall order. No one knows anything, even if you speak perfect Spanish. Be ready to find everything on your own.
The Malecon has all the hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions of any major resort town in the world. The main advantage is the many good seafood restaurants and the fact that it is only a $2 taxi ride to the less touristy hotels and B&B's on the edge of town.
This is the 'strip' below the high condos on Las Salinas where almost every building has a seafood restaurant below on street level. Great place to have a beer and people watch.
It's not fancy, it's not glitzy, it's not 'exciting'. It's just pleasant to walk on. A no-frills boardwalk...
A trip to the Malecon in Salinas is vastly different from weekdays to the weekend. During the week, the locals and expats jog along the foreshore in the early mornings and early evenings. The beach is quiet and there is ample parking. However, come the weekend it is a mass of people. The beach is covered in deck chairs, umbrellas, and vendors selling everything from ffo to sunglasses. It is quite a spectacle to visit and see both midweek and the weekend.
Walking the malecon early morning, early evening, or at night offer entirely different experiences. Mornings find lots of joggers and dog walkers, early evening is reserved for sunset lovers and lovers in general, and late night brings out the younger disco crowd. You'll find families intermingled at all times of day and night. I was here for six months and lived the last few in a high rise condo on the malecon. It is super safe, I never felt uncomfortable even walking alone late at night. During high season, the beach is wildly popular and crowded. New Year's Eve is a high-energy epic experience. The malecon is regularly patrolled at all times of the year. The water is beautiful turquoise, and calm. The beach changes personality from one end to the other, as does the sand, which is strangely cool. Many restaurants across the street from the beach offer patio seating; there's an eclectic mix of food choices. Smokin' BBQ was my favorite restaurant on the malecon; it's run by a couple from the U.S. Chipipe beach, on the opposite side of the yacht club, is by far the bigger and prettier of the two beaches.
We rented 2 beach chairs and an umbrella on the Malecon. The weather was incredible and the vendors were a blast. We tried macaroons, coco helado, hats, sunglasses and beer vendors. It was fun watching the boat and jet ski riders, along with the little fish jumping out of the water. Easy and restful day on the Malecon.
The downtown Salinas Malecon is great for nighttime activities but for beach action head to Chipipe Beach. Due to long run environmental conditions the beach on the Malecon is getting shorter every year, especially at high tide. Your best bet is to head to another beach for swimming and sunbathing. At night however, the Malecon is a great place to walk up and down to people watch, grab a bite to eat and to hang out.
