On our way to Paipa from Bogota a good place to stop for refreshments and a little history. The two battles at the beginning of the 19th century, at this small bridge of Boyaca and at Pontano de Vargas marked the end of the Spanish occupation and the rise of an independent Colombia.Nice surroundings, coffee and souvenirs.
If you drive by it you should definitely go see it. But if it doesn't fit into your schedule than don't go all the way to visit the place. Historically its a very important place for Colombia of course but the shoe memorial isn't worth it to reschedule your trip.
Boyaca is a gorgeous region that offers colonial towns and bucolic mountains along with idyllic lakes. The roads are convenient and it is the best get-away from the capital. Puente de Boyaca gives the traveler a sense of what the battle against the Spaniards must have been like.
If you are in Bogota this is a most see. It is the place where a significant battle took place which changed the history of the country and helped create an independent nation which is now a productive and beautiful place to live and or visit.
If you're lucky enough to be in Colombia in December this is a good place to see. The decorations are amazing and they literally cover an entire hillside with holiday lights. Kids will love it!
Before you go it is worth reading up on the significance of this tract of land and you will understand the importance. Great monument to Bolivar although sadly in need of restoration. Also a monument to the Albion (British) Legion who were pivotal in the liberation of Colombia.
If you're visiting Villa de Leyva it's worth to make a stop at this place that is beautiful but as others have said with few information, no guides or so.
Guess you have to learn it before you go, to make it meaninful or hire someone to help tou with that part. Since almost al Colombians understand what went on, they don't bother with the explanation and since it's a big place, with several view points, I guess the trip is both historical and a good chance to sit back and relax for a little while, enjoying the nice views the place offers... the landscape is quite something, too.Been there a couple of times, but always go in on my way to Villa de eyva or Boyaca's beautiful towns (driving from Bogota)--- if you're around stop there and check it out. But to drive from Bogota all the way to this place... mmmm, not so sure.
It is the place where the independence last battle was fought. A little bit far if you only are going for that point of interest, but surrounded by a LOT of other beautiful and interesting places to visit.
