This is a good couple of hours to walk through the museum, take some pictures, watch the birds and the waves and have a drink at the small concession. Especially nice at sunset. Very close to the airport so if you have a layover, take a taxi here and relax with the views.

The place is just beautiful. Even when you can't descend (stairs are broken) the view is worthy the small trip.

Amazing view of the ocean, the restaurant and museum are quite nice. If you have to wait couple hours at the airport, best option is to take a taxi, visit this place, drink couple pisco sours and eat at La Portada Restaurant. The lookout is quite impressive, to watch the deep ocean, desert shore and off course La Portada natural monument.

It´s a must to take a picture with the Portada beside you, after you can eat some sea food plates at the restorant,Try the mix ceviche and local Pisco Sour.

This amazing view is good for 30 min or so, because you can walk around a bit. You couldn'r descend to the beach while we were there, but there were footprints, so there must be a way down somewhere. The guy painting the rails at the restaurant said there was a dangerous way down on the other side. The restautrant will not serve drinks without ordering a full meal, so at the time of writing, don't count on sipping a cold beer while taking in the view from the resturant. Why they don't see the lost revenue opportunity is baffling.

If you go to Antofagasta - or even have a short stop-over at airport - its worth of visiting La Portada and to take a photo! Pacific Ocean and La Portada - always in my mind. One day a tsunami will break it down; and then its too late to see it anymore.

Hi guys, one of me favorite places in Chile is Antofagasta because is the gate to other places and I love the fact you are between sea and desert. La Portada in particular has this beautiful energy about this place, the whether in Antofagasta is always great because it never rains so you can go anytime, any day to see this "espetaculo" of nature.

If you come to this city you must see this place. Is only 35 minutes travel by car from the city. Is a view of the sandy formation eroded by the sea creating a beautiful cliff and also in the sea you will see a rocky arch. Beautiful!

It is a must see if you are in Antofagasta. The beach is closed due to concerns of falling rocks after the last earthquake hit the area so you can only take pictures of La Portada.

Take a cuppa or Picnic with you to enjoy while looking at the view as the coffee shop is not very good. They could do very well there if they spruced it up a bit and smiled at their customers.

Antofagasta is not much of a tourist destination, but I found that it still had lots to offer. The scenery is striking as you can look out into the vast empty expanse of desert, and feel like you are lost in the middle of nowhere, and then turn around, and yet there´s the ocean behind you! The Portada itself is an arch in sea, which to me was really inspiring. I know other reviewers seemed disappointed, but I found i marvelous to witness a wonder of nature. That being said, it is a difficult place to get to, I had access to a car, but without that I don´t think there´s any way to get here (maybe taxi?) It is free and also there is a restaurant, but I heeded the advice I saw here and didn´t bother with it. One of the paths is closed, thanks to an earthquake, but I still thought it was an awesome experience watching the sun set behind La Portada and the city lights of Antofagasta turning on.

This rock is a symbol for this city and highlights how really astonishing the northern coastline of Chile is. It is an amazing sight when the surf is wild!

Its cold at La portada, and there's nothing to see except this huge rock made of poo...There was a restaurant there, it was nice, not great though.

This magnificent view is just a few miles north of the city of Antofagasta, near the airport. The colors and magnitude of the scenery is unbelievable.
