There are some nice restaurants and butchers. You can find nice meat for an Asado. I don't care much about souvenir area. If you are looking for a sandwich look for somewhere just outside the Mercado as price for these items are cheaper. I tried Rapa Nui which is just around the corner.
I just came back from my trip to the south and found myself looking for rustic chilean food... That is when we came upon this market. I was very disappointed with the excessive prices, ok food and mass made souveniers.I recommend the Feria Anibal Pinto if you are looking for something more genuinely chilean.
Really good seafood and pastel de Choclo. The service is good but the furnishing needs work. Old tables and the area has a smell but with all the seafood I guess that is to be expected.
I have visited the Mercado in Temuco several times. The shops are very cute and filled with handmade items. I love just walking around in the Mercado and see what they have to offer. Not only the clothes and souvenirs, but also the meat that they sell there. Twice I have been eating at the Mercado and each time the food has been good and very chilean. Both times I ate whitefish (merluza) and it was quite good.
This is an authentic place in the heart of Temuco with a local atmosphere. Sure many shops are for tourists, but many others, especially the food Shops. are very authentic. It's a "must see" when you are in Temuco.
The Mercados in Chile are a bit different from the European mercados. Here you can find good and quite big restaurants in the mercados. We had lunch in O'Gresillon (if I remember the name correctly). The place was packed with locals and no wonder, the food was simple but tasty. Sopaipillas with pebre were a bit better in Mastique, another restaurant in the mercado, but longinaza and cordero very good. Try also the red house wine!
Interesting marketplace. I started feeling like I was on The Amazing Race, as the stalls all started to look the same. I found several merchants willing to take American Dollars which was convenient. There are a dozen or so restaurants inside the building.
the municipal market of Temuco is one of the best Market in Chile and Sudamerica. Is a place clean, modern and plenty of craft and elements of the traditional mapuche culture like musical instruments: the Kultrum (the ceremonial drum) and the trutruka (a wind instrument like flute or trompet), textiles like "mantas", rugs, blankets and bags, with the characteristics abstract and ornamental desings, and the silver mapuche jewelry. You can buy some souvenirs, like the unforgettable "indio pícaro", a wooden statuette with a "big" smile and a surprise. You can taste the traditional Mapuche and chilean cuisine in one of the small restaurants located inside the market, with the local spice called Merken.
