Well worth the visit take your time and don't forget to go upstairs also. Glad I added it to my must do list !
As we had decided not to go to Easter Island, it was a pleasant surprise to find a 3 meter plus Moai outside this Museum. Didn't go to the museum but now I have some great photos of a Moai.
Conveniently located in Avenida Libertad, the Fonck has a beautiful MOAI statue outside and you can visit it right after breakfast, on your way to Reñaca, a seaside resort a few miles up north.
This small but very interesting museum is worth a visit! The ticket is cheap (2500 pesos per person). There is a free guided tour inSpanish but she does speak English and is very knowledgeable. There are 3 areas in the museum: Chilean mainland history, Easter Island history and natural history. Very beautiful artefacts and fotography allowed. We enjoyed it very much.
What a wonderful museum! 3m tall Moai outside, pleasant gardens to sit in the sun (both free to access) small museum but entry fee is reasonable for its size ($2500CLP at time of writing). Downstairs has a good room with several Easter Island objects and info plus a few other rooms with artefacts plus 3 shrunken heads and a video screen explaining the shrinking process and upstairs are cabinets full of stuffed animals and insect cases (similar to the Horniman Museum in London if you have ever been). Toilet facilities and a tiny gift shop. I'd say it's a must do, I loved it :-)
Great little museum to visit. It won't blow your mind, nor your wallet. but for the price you can learn a lot about the pre-european inhabiters of these lands.
. . . .why not spend a little time here and learn something about it? Also, don't miss the room of artifacts from the Mapuche, from southern Chile. You won't find these displays in many other places, so GO!
This is a small museum, but has a lot of interesting artifacts and information, particularly from Rapa Nui. Nothing earth-shattering, and the display of taxidermy upstairs was a little creepy, but I found it worth visiting.
Museum with Christmas Island archeology emphasis. Small exhibits with fairly standard displays....small facility.
Even if you aren't going to the museum, this one is worth a visit because outside is a Moai! You can take a picture :) It's a few blocks from the Mall and the beach.Sundays are free for Chileans.
Fonck museum is a small, but very interesting museum of archeology. It is organized by Chilean peoples and there is a special section on the Rapa Nui. There is also a whole floor of bugs and local animals. The only drawback is that not everything is translated into English, so there are valuable snippets of information only Spanish speakers (or readers) can learn about. It is, nevertheless, a fascinating place to visit.
This was an unexpected, but very worthwhile stop during my trip to Vina del Mar. The Fonck Museum not only has one of the few moai heads outside of Easter Island, but a nice little exhibit devoted to moai culture. If you're in Vina Del Mar and want to take a break from the beaches and restaurants, you should go to the Fonck Museum.
This is the place to see in Viña, much more so than the Flower Clock or the Wulff Castle or the casino. There is a nice mansion in the middle of a beautiful park and the moai stands at the entrance. Unfortunately, I was running short of time and didn't go inside.
Very small natural history museum. Friendly staff. Best feature though, is the moai in front of the museum.
We didn't tour the museum, but examined and photographed th moai outside it. Because it's outside it's free. It was impressive even if it was one of the smaller ones.
