This was a painful experience and I would not recommend the museum unless you're very, very interested in religious iconography and ephemera. They do have some nice art as well as vestments and chalices. And it's interesting that franciscan monks still live there. Nice, but the way you're treated by the staff really ruined the experience for me. Finger snapping, nasty looks and rude comments were on tap - I had inadvertently wandered a bit from the group and was hassled for the rest of the tour and treated like a criminal. The tour was mindnumbingly slow - basically you're locked in a room and forced to stay in a small area until everyone is done looking or asking questions. Then you move a few feet and do it all again. Sadly, the information provided is not that interesting or thorough. God forbid you walk too far away from the guide! Personally, I'd save the 15 bolivianos and relax and enjoy the mirador across the street. Lovely views of the city!
The tour was quite interesting, although we weren't given any time to linger in the beautiful gardens & not left alone for a second. Of course I understand there are still people living there who might not want tourists roaming around. Impressive, but a bit of an overload of tortured Christ imagery for a non-religious person...
This museum had the potential to be great with lots of beautiful courtyards and interesting artefacts. Unfortunately the staff completely ruined it. We arrived and paid quite a lot to get in we were then made to wait until the guide had finished her chat before we could go in. Once in she asked if we spoke Spanish and when we said only a little she flounced and said well I don’t speak English. This would have been fine we were happy to just look with her leading us and have been many places were there has been a language barrier but never one where it has spoilt our enjoyment because of the guides attitude. From the moment she discovered we didn’t speak Spanish she was extremely rude, completely ignoring us and clicking her fingers and demanding we move. There are only 30 mins allotted for the total tour which seems unnecessary as they have very few visitors and there is a wealth of artefacts which you just cant appreciate in that time. One of the rooms looks fascinating but you have to peer through the door and due to the light can see nothing but reflection. I would like to be able to recommend this museum but it is not value for money and the attitude is very unpleasant.
Tours are in Spanish (our guide was able to translate) however the guide did not seem to interested in her job, explaining but not engaging. The tree is worth seeing and walking around three times to have a wish. The exhibits are OK but nothing particularly special. When exiting the museum, walk straight ahead where you can get excellent views over the city of Sucre.
When we arrived, the lady at the desk had a social talk with a friend. We waited some minutes and finally asked for a ticket. Not possible now, come back in 20 minutes, was the not so friendly answer. So we came back, and after being totally ignored for some time, we politely asked once again for tickets. Not possible now, because of a group. So we left. Que servicio malo.......increible.
The lady on the desk was quite dismissive. I was asked to return in 15 minutes so went to the cafe close by then returned 20 mins later and bought a ticket. I then waited a further 15 mins before my tour started. There were some nice courtyards with fruit trees but the highlight of my visit here was seeing the huge cedar tree which is over 1000 years old. Our guided tour was in Spanish and the guide spoke slowly to help me understand easier. We were shown various rooms containing art, music scores, vestments, treasures and coins and given time to look around. There was a funeral service taking place in the church so unfortunately we were unable to view inside that area.
If you are going to see only a Museum of Religious art in Sucre make it to this one. Well presented and a diversity of interesting displays. The mirador in front of the church offers nice views over Sucre.
This museum is a gem. We enjoyed our guide as she spoke very slow and distinct. She knew a lot about the artifacts and answered questions very well. A just see!
It really brings it home when the monks are going about their daily business whist you are looking at a most amazing collection, put together over the years by the preceding monks. Again some of the art works were in a pretty woeful condition from years of neglect and probably climatic conditions
Walk around the cedar three times and legend says you get (if clockwise) a spouse or (if counter-clockwise) three wishes. Some excellent art pieces, although the guide kind of rushes you through.
Our tour of the church was in Spanish and felt very rushed. The guide told us a brief description of the rooms then gave us a very short time to look over the objects before rushing us into the next room.
