I was lucky enough to visit the Peace Tower in February - on the night it was lit up. Was intrigued by the fact there were hardly any tourists on the boat, and a lot of children. We arrived and walked up to the tower, with superb views across to the city. The ceremony at the tower started with a gong being played (very powerful) Around 100 people held hands around the tower and stood in silence. The children then sang a number of songs. The whole experience was moving and very emotional. And something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I will definitely return one day. Was buzzing for days. Thank you Iceland.
We extended our holiday by a day to visit the Imagine Peace Tower. It is only lit on certain days i.e. John Lennon's birthday through to his demise in December and also Yoko's birthday on the 18th Feb. A memorable and emotional experience as we all held hands around the tower. Well worth extending our holiday by a day to take in the Peace Tower. 9 lights extending 4,000 mtrs into the sky. It was Yoko's 82nd birthday. She was not there but nearly always visits on the 9th Oct. John's birthday. Everyone should take a leaf out of Yoko's book and strive for world peace and harmony.
The trip to Videy island is great in itself. The imagine peace tower is a n impressive initiative. So simple, so pure.
I visited on a freezing windy night with Elding, the main whale-watching tour company. I'm not at all fond of ferries but the trip to Viðey Island was very calm and smooth with easy boarding. If you're not a trained photographer, just enjoy the experience as even with university training, I struggled to get any good images of it, especially in the cold wind.
It's a great trip to Videy Island during the summer. You can get up close to the Tower and see it in detail. You can also explore the island leisurely. Now I want to go back in the winter and see it when it's lit up! The only drawback: it's hard finding the ferry from the nearest bus station on the mainland.
I loved seeing this memorial to John Lennon while in Reykjavik over the Christmas break of 2014. Best part was that the energy used to give off the light was all natural geothermal energy. Love, Peace and Nature.... just imagine. ;)
Dear Douglas C, Thank you for joining the tour and sharing your kind and informative comment. We're glad you enjoyed it and the up close view of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER. Kind regards the team at Viðey Island
Dear dcatravelerDc, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER. We are sorry to hear you've felt that it reduced your view of the northern lights. Since the light of the tower is a narrow beam we've not experienced this problem before and many guests have actually enjoyed the combination of the two. Kind regards from the team at Viðey Island
Dear Nadine C, Thank you for sharing your informative comment about the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER. We are glad you enjoyed the visit to the island and view of the tower it self. Kind regards from the team at Viðey Island
Dear wonder-luster, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER. We are sorry to hear the light wasn't more visible that night but is sure changes depending on the weather and atmospheric conditions each day. We'd also like to point out that like most other work of art it's best appreciated up close on Viðey island where you can join the guided tourKind regards from the team at Viðey Island
