I traveled to Dyrholaey in January while it was the dead of winter and it was an amazing experience. I was a bit worried my non 4-wheel drive car was going to make it up the steep cliffs but it really turned out to not be any trouble and I'm extremely glad I did it. I was lucky that on the day I went the wind wasn't blowing very hard bc the views at the top are astounding. It really does look like you're on another planet. The black sand beaches stretch for miles and the unique rock formations are quite a sight. The lighthouse at the top was very cool, I don't think you're allowed to go inside it however. There are birds nesting on the cliffs but no puffins in the winter, or we didn't see any at least. If you're passing through the area or want to make a day trip out of it, I would definitely call it a must.
I have been here twice, a year apart. My first visit was in October of 2012 and it was fabulous. Amazing views of the ocean and very cool black pebble beach. The second time was very misty and the visibility was not very good
On the way to the black sand beach, make a right turn and follow the trial to the top, you can reach Dyrholaey light house. It is actually a cliff with big flat meadow. Usually the wind is strong but not effect the charming and beauty. Near the cliff, you can see many nets of the birds, like seagulls or even Puiffins. Also since the wind is strong, the water drop from the sea will actually goes up but not falling down. It is so interesting.
This place is beautiful beyond words. This is one of the places in Iceland that I went that gave me goosebumps (in a good way). It is easy to get here via car. Before that, you can even have your lunch in Vik. :) There is no need to walk far to get views like this. Simply splendid. The wind is killing, but its worth it. It is risky for small kids and taking a photo is also very difficult due to wind at high mountains. But one gets a great view of the basalt formations from the top and black sand beaches and yellow/green top cliffs.
the rock formation and the views from the top are amazing. it was raining and EXTREMELY windy when we went up there. felt like we would fall off the top! if you are in vik, this is a must visit. easily accessible by car.
The waves were ridiculous here so the drama on this day and the previous was fantastic. This shot was from a different camera because, sadly, I lost my camera and the best shots I took the day before.
We were here early September and wow, the views were amazing. When standing on the cliff with the lighthouse, look east to see the large arch and further beyond that to see the "elephant" rock out in the ocean. Then take the long walk to the arch cliff as this is a good spot to see puffins taking the huge plunge to the ocean. Spectacular.
We were there on a very cold and windy day but were so impressed with the views we came back the next day to photograph. You have to walk all the way to the lighthouse to see the arch, but well worth the short walk. Phenomenal view's from every angle.
It was quite windy and cool when I visited, which detracted a little from the experience. However, it was still quite an adventure! The roads are not very well marked, but my advice is to head up and park by the lighthouse. The views looking down at the beach with the blue waters brushing up against the black sand were quite gorgeous. There is also a path that goes right out above the arch, which is a must do. We did not walk all the way to the end, but the views were just incredible! Gorgeous in all directions! There is also a path that heads down to the beach. We ended up driving down to the beach because we didn't want to have to walk back up. But the path looked manageable. Definitely check out the beach as well. We spotted a few puffins, which was fun! There are also some nooks you can poke around in and rocks to climb over. It was all great fun!
It's been four months since I was in Vik and Dirholaey and fascinating images of these places do not leave my memory. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most beautiful natural places that my eyes have seen. Words aren't enough to describe the beauty.
We almost stopped our daily drive before we got here and were very glad we didn't. Beautiful views of a black beach and interesting rock formations.
Windy windy beautiful site above the black beaches . Be careful with small children or even adults close to the edges as you could easily fall over the side. The rocks and view are spectacular. We took lots of photographs with the sun setting in January 2015. I keep trying to download but tripadvisor says my pictures are too big. Would enjoy seeing on a longer basis as the sun was setting. Take a hat, a long lens and enjoy. This is an unusual site worth the drive too.
Our little 4wd rental Ford made it up the hill just fine. The views are spectacular, particularly on a wintery January day withe the wind blowing 20+. We took a great many photos, probably spent an hour up at the lighthouse and General area.
What a treat to visit this beautiful place in the winter. We were fortunate to have perfect weather in December. It was a lovely day to visit this beautiful place.
