On our way from Giresun to Trabzon, we stopped for a nice fish lunch by the bay in Tirebolu. We then decided to charter a taxi to go a few km inland up one of the hazelnut plantation-covered valleys to see the obscure Bedrama kale. It took a fair while, going up hill and down dale in the taxi through the hazelnut groves, till we finally came to the start of the trail up into the castle. The castle is tiny, but it is perched on a tall stack of rock, and getting up to it is a feat in itself. The climate there is utterly sodden (they grow tea not too far from here), so the vegetation is positively Triffid-like, and all the surfaces are covered with slippery moss. There is not so much a path as a succession of footholds. At several points on the ascent, one skirts past hidden, unguarded drops of perhaps 15-20 m. The final ascent to the castle is via the top of a surface of bare rock with footholds carved into it long ago, and more recently a rather rickety handrail fixed beside it. The rock cambers off on either side to a drop of c. 30m. Getting to the top (alive) was exhilirating, but we were utterly exhausted, sodden and filthy. Blackberries gown within the (rather vestigial) castle on the summit, and I fondly remember nibbling on them as another bank of cloud obscured the otherwise panoramic vista of hazelnut cultivation.
