On our drive along the Danube, we came across the most beautiful little town perched high above the water. The streets are amazingly narrow as you walk to the castle at the top. Unfortunately its popularity has resulted in thousands of tourists and quite a few tacky souvenir shops.
I and my wife went there on January 3rd. The village is quiet and less people. Most shop was closed. But I have a great time their for taking the photo. I love it.
This gorgeous little village has a great history. High above the village stand the ruins of the castle in which Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned for 1 year on his way back from the 3rd Crusade. His mother Eleanor of Aquitaine had to pay a hefty ransome which nearly bankrupted England and paid for the Vienna city walls. The village it quite steep in parts and full of restaurants and gift shops. The Weiser family have no less than 3 shops, 1 at the top and 2 at the bottom of the town where they sell all there superb products made from fruit, mainly apricots. Liqueurs, sweets, preserves of all kinds. They also grind their own coffee and serve delicious coffee, hot chocolate and mulled fruit wines. Very welcome on a cold December day. The little squares and lanes are a delight as is the waterfont path.
Dunstein is exactly the type of town you expect to see on the Danube River. It is very quaint. Great for photos and you can see the whole town in 30 minutes. The ruin castle that is above the town was where Richard The Lion Heart was inprisoned and held for ransom.Just outside of town is an impressive monument which we were told is to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon.
We visited this small village as stop on our river cruise. It is so quaint and lovely. We enjoyed walking the cobblestone streets and visiting the small shops. It is a memorably beautiful village
We spent a couple of hours in this beautiful small village, as our cruise stopped here. There are some lovely little quaint shops and side streets to explore. It is a short walk from the Danube with a slight uphill walk. It's main 'claim to fame' is that Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in the castle during the Third Crusade! I can imagine if more and more River Cruise ships stop here it will spoil the quaint village somewhat!
Perfect get a way! Lovely place! Great view when you approach the place by boat on the Danube River!
Lovely ornate church with nice outside views. interesting cemetery near the church also. Very much a photo op stop.

interesting , Also fun to hike to the castle ruins and see the view from above the town. There are many wineries to visit and walking and biking trails, drink some wine in town at any little shop and find your favourite! great food and hospitality. Perfect get away. No shopping for fashion other than austrian cultural clothes.
What a beautiful small village on the banks of the Danube, it has a small population of 400 people surrounded by vineyards, the tour can be on a small tourist "train", although it is a short walk from the landing stages to the town. It has one main street which ends at the elegant hotel Schloss, with special rooms with excellent views, it is supposed to have been a favourite of Princess Diana. Back into the town you can see the ruins of the castle where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner, his mother Eleanor of Aquitane bankrupted Britain at the time in order to gain his release! and of course the special church with its beautiful blue and white spire which can be seen for miles. This little town has a lot to offer for such a small place, and in our case we had a Dutch guide who should have been on the stage for his facts told in comedic style he was hilarious. Not the easiest town for the infirm.
