They don't make cathedrals like this anymore. Take the time and tour the cattedrale. It's absolutely beautiful!
Thanks to others recommendations, we sought out the Duomo on our short visit to Ascoli Piceno. The mosaics in the crypt were well worth seeing.
If you are in Ascoli Piceno you cannot miss a visit to this beautiful Cathedral. Make sure you go down to see the Crypt, you can't really describe the beauty of it, you have to see for yourself.
This is a nice, well maintained Duomo that certainly is worth the visit when you are in Ascoli. The well lit crypte is the nicest part to visit where you can experience a mystical feeling.
I absolutely love this church, with its blue ceiling and paintings, great for a visit, religious or not
We visited the Duomo during Carnival time in Italy. I did not expect it to be so beautiful inside. The ceiling is lovely. The statue located below is also very nice. We were told that the Duomo was built on an old Roman temple hence the reason for the downstairs. You can still see the old roman passageways near the statue. It is definitely a must see if you are nearby!!
This is a "not to be missed" stop on your tour of the Marche. Beautiful open square, great museum, many cafes and wonderful views from the outdoor seating areas. It is quaint, yet you can see how easy it would be to live there and enjoy the surroundings -beaches-antiquities and still feel like you have all the modern necessities we all like to think we could do with out , but can't.Even with out doing the tours of the city you can enjoy the city and what it has to offer all.
The Duomo is very beautiful outside, but you'll never imagine what you'll find inside.....a wonderfully decorated blue ceiling and don't miss to visit the crypt which has finely carved columns ,mosaics and a statue.
The cathedral seems to have new, or newly restored, large mosaics which are fantastic and worth a visit. The crypt is also interesting - well lit so you can see how extensive it is.
At the Baptistery next to the Duomo you can reserve a guided tour. The guide was very good and patient and really liked his job and sharing his knowledge. And told us so many interesting things about the churches in Ascoli Piceno. We adults learned a lot.Our children liked his tale, which they too could appreciate. If you visit Ascoli Piceno, using this guided tour service is a good idea and will get you into the old part of the city.Upon our request, he also advised us to the restaurant "Il Teatro" in the centre, when we asked for the place that the "locals" would go to. Excellent advice: see my review of this place too.
The highlight of this church is the magnificent polyptych by Carlo Crivelli in one of the side chapels. An absolute must see if you visit this town!
To my mind the best part of this church is the crypt. It is rather too well lit to give any feeling of mysticism but the layout, statues and ceiling and wall decoration (some of which was being restored) were very attractive. The golden baldacchio in front of the altar is striking but otherwise it is an average duomo.
The dome is of typical Ascoli architecture and apart from the main area it has a chapel with representative paintings and an underground crypt with an altar surrounded by mosaics depicting world war II Ascoli
Opens early - 8 am.Nothing to dislike about the cathedral; the Baptistry, in a separate building, was not open.
Ascoli Piceno is a small town, that you probably skyp from your plans.. but don't do it! it is lovely! We had a great time here, enjoy the magic of the place and the Doumo is amazing.. and please, don't forget to have some Olives Ascolanas!
