It's basically a one-room museum, but well designed. Good to kill an hour or so when you;re recovering from jet lag.
If you want to find out how the hunters for what are all protected species today conquered the islands, and how the miners started mixing with these, paving the road for a tax haven and tourism industry today, then you should pay a sizeable entrance fee and spend a good hour or two reading the panels. The animals look tacky and you may end up wondering why on earth you went in there. The hunting stories are quite brutal too - the stats of the early hunting days are heartbreaking. If that doesn't bother you - it may be an interesting visit/attraction.
Nice display and informative of the history of the island, the city, and the mining. Absolutly recomended if you haven't been here before.
When you arrive at Svalbard, this is the place to start. It gives you an overview over Svalbards history, nature and culture. Knowing something about Svalbard will make your stay at Svalbard more interesting and give some perspective to the things you see.
Walkable from the city centre and located next to the University Centre in Svalbard, this is an informative museum with detailed history and wildlife of Svalbard. Apart from seeing the exhibition and reading the boards, you could even try on the uniform of the miners and crawl along the simulated mining tunnel. Besides, you could relax a bit in the sofa there. Souvenirs are nice and with reasonable price. I managed to get some nice Svalbard souvenirs for my family and friends. A must-go for all Svalbard visitors.
Very clear presentations.Good coverage of the changes over the years at LongyearbyenInadequate linkage to North Pole Expeditions museum.
A very informative museum of Svalbards history with stuffed native animals. Svalbard has a very long and interesting history and this museum is the place to learn it!
I visited the museum as part of a tour and I thought it was really lovely. It is a great size and the information is available in english. I normally get bored in museums but it was very interesting and was beautifully presented.
When we was there we were the only one. So quite and lovely to walk all around to read and see without any loud speaking people.
This museum is at the bottom of the main street, easy to walk to. Lockers to put boots and belongings and hangers to hang your coats. Crocs available to walk around in. Very interesting to see and most information is in English. Very informative about the wildlife and their coal mining industry. It really is a must to see, we looked around on our first afternoon in Longyearbyen as the next two days were filled with snowmobiling and the husky sleighs. Check opening times as I think they differ from winter to summer. Take as long as you want, and its lovely and cosy in there.
