We tour France in our motorhome and love its villages, towns and cities. Poitiers is a favourite. Many visitors think Futuroscope when they visit Poitiers, but there is so much more to this vibrant city. The mixture of medieval and modern streets and buildings is a real winner. The shopping is good and the restaurant life vibrant. The Cathedral Quarter is special and a must see.

The beauty of this building make it a must see. We were the only visitors present and were awed by the windows.

Very similar to St Hilaire. Poitiers appears to be a more modern town than, say, Le Mans so doesn't quite have the same "kerb appeal". That's what we thought anyway.

It is in the main square, has a richly carved front and unusual coloured pillars along the nave. These really need artificial light or bright sun to fully appreciate. The Palais de Justice is also here. The cathedral is down towards the river, it is very light and reminiscent of an English cathedral.(choir stalls and the lovely East window) Go through the arch to the right and you come to the Baptistere St Jean, built on a Roman foundation (fee). We parked free by the river and walked in past yet another big church who's name escapes me.

The cathedral is the most prominent religious building in the city. In the vicinity you can find the very nice Romanesque church of Ste-Radegonde and south of the cathedral the baptistery of St-Jean (IVth-XIXth century) and the museum of Ste-Croix.Baptistery : 2€

they've made the 'centerville' for pedestrians only--so the real problem is finding a parking space if you have a car--it's quite nice to walk in this medieval area where you find all the modern shops (sephora, l'occitane) and open cafes and then you bump into a big church---there was a music festival going on in the square which is quite huge for a medieval layout--the area is inhabited by many young people (students)--

The whole area has been given a recent face-lift and it's so typically French "café-culture".....while-away a Saturday morning here and immerse yourselves!!

Great opportunity to walk through time. The winding streets and places to stop with family and friends give a great perspective about what's important.

We visited the Cathedral on a Sunday morning and therefore there was a service on so we couldn't wander freely. Our approach from the main square in Poitier was down a long slopingnarrow road which we had to climb back up again afterwards. The exterior of the cathedral was impressive although the interior left us cold with little character. I suppose we were spoilt having seen Notre Dame La Grande which was so unusual in comparison.

In Poitier all the best is in the City Centreville, and the cathedral quarter is great with a wide variety of shops and sites to see.
