The Marquis of Vauban is most famously a military engineer who designed over 100 fortifications and wrote the book for those who followed. As an architect, he designed the famous Dome of Les Invalides in Paris. This was his home when not on assignment for King Louis XIV. What I found interesting were his library, ship models and connections to the American Revolution. His house is a reflection of his life and career. It is imposing on the outside, yet lived in on the inside. The house is still in the hands of his descendants who lovingly care for it.
I would agree with the other reviews that the historical link to Vauban is interesting but given that there are limited rooms to visit and no gardens to walk round, not worth the €8.50 entrance for an adult. It was helpful to be given an English guide to the chateau as you go in but nowhere as impressive as other chateaux we have visited in France.
Bazoches is the most interesting castle in the area and only a 15 minute scenic drive from Vezelay. It is the former home of Vauban, Louis XIV famous military engineer. Many interesting furnished rooms and a beautiful view over the valley. When we visited, the owner Amaury de Sigalas was even working the souvenir shop ;-) Allow an hour and a half for the self-guided tour.
It's a wonder more people don't come here. Lacking the grandeur of the big chateaux in the Loire valley, this gem more than compensates in terms of location and background interest. Deep in the Morvan National Park, one of the pepper-pot towers affords a direct view of the abbey at Vezelay some 10km away. Once the home of the Marquis de Vaubon, Louis XIV's favourite, it is still inhabited by his descendants and thus retains an intimacy lacking in other, similar places. No need to join a guided tour either. Make sure you're not caught out by the lunchtime closing though
One of the best "go to' s " we've visited. A "family-sized" chateau, which looks lived in. Vauban was an extraordinary man. Make sure you take the very helpful guide with you.
Great setting, well preserved and fascinating history of the Chateau and family. The map and tapestries would be the highlights thanks.
Very tidy and well maintained lawn. Self tour with a plastic English guide brochure was given as we entered! This was returned as we left the place. We enjoyed the interesting layout as well as the fine furniture. The story behind this chateau is also interesting.
This is a wonderful chateau that was owned by Vauban, an adviser to Louis XIV. It is well worth a visit.
As fans of Vauban (one of the great engineers/military men of France), we were excited to visit his truly lovely home, from which he directed the fortifications of over 300 cities across France. The château is well-preserved and the rooms are furnished with interesting things, including many of Vauban's things. The self-guided tour takes you through the lovely building, and you may also wander around the small garden (with beautiful views) at the front of the château.
