If you're skiing in Zermatt over Christmas and wonder if you can find a good Midnight Mass, try St. Mauritius Church. For quite a long time before the mass, this catholic church plays beautiful and astonishingly loud bells (for such a little church) for the whole town to enjoy. They did the mass in 3 languages German, French and English ... something for everybody. All felt welcome. This very pleasant midnight mass starts at 23:00.
We were treated to beautiful music during the Christmas service by musicians that traveled in for the day. Lovely church with amazing view of the Matterhorn as you exit the main door.
All round my Europe trip, i visited so many churches and spent my few minutes, sometime hour.I spent an hour in this museum where my nice friend shared stories that were painted up on the ceiling and walls.I am always amazed by their fine paintings and decorations.
Unbelievable to be in Zermatt and find a church with my country's name The sister of the church was so smiley and complimenting my mum on her saree .... made us feel more comfortable
A beautiful church just offf the main street. There was information in anumber of languages, Very ornate work inside church
Right in town, this Catholic Church is worth a visit even if you are not Catholic. It is a beautiful altar and is very decorated.
This catholic church is very pretty, interesting, and in every sense a working church within the local community. The reredos is most ornate, and I was lucky enough to coincide with the organist practising mid-week as well as at 6pm evensong on Sunday. But, mid-nave, central aisle you must look up and enjoy the lovely painted depiction of the story of Noah and the Ark of the covenant - it is lovely - and features a kangaroo!!
It was a rushed look as they were preparing for a concert that evening. What we saw was very beautiful.
This church is very beautiful. being a small town you can easy hear the bells ringing even from a distance. very nice from inside
There are several masses, two in German, one saturday night and one sunday morning. The usual presider/homilist is quite good. But will speak in High German (not swiss german). So those of you who can speak German will be able to understand him. Music is usually quite good. You don't have to dress up many of the folks come in very casual clothing. Some of the locas are dressed. They also have daily mass for those of you who are inclined to do so! You can get the times on the Zermatt.ch website
Wonderful Sunday evening mass since I couldn't make it in the morning. Church is a beauty in itself, music was excellent, priest's preach very good. I really enjoyed it and my goddaughter, too!
The tower of St. Mauritius Church dominates Zermatt. It was built in 1913 and the architect was Adolf Gaudy, who was an important church designer. It is situated in the main town square (Kirchplatz). It has altars from the 18th century. The interior of the church is baroque and very elaborate. There is a lot of gold. The bells ring regularly and there are frequent services.
