The gate of hell! One of the prettiest and oldest places in the city. Oh, and please note that there's a -partially disused- bar/cafe/venue called 'In d'n Hiemel' (in heaven) right next to it...

Although a small site, the history was fascinating, although the information provided for non-Dutch speakers was limited.

This fabulous gate house has got to be the number one thing to see in Maastricht. A great sense of history. Still used by traffic, its just a shame about the modern road signs!

Being a Maastricht native, the Helpoort is amongst my favourite spots in town. Built in 1229, it's the oldest remaining city-gate in the Netherlands. From late spring to early autumn the interior is accessible to anyone who's interested in the local history of the town, as it is home to an exhibition providing information about Maastricht as a fortified city. Additionally, a visit to the Helpoort can be combined with a walk around the city wall.

Helpoort and also the city walk probably make one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I could not stop taking pictures of the different angles. One of the best places in town and free.

The gate, wall and canons are to complete the tour in Maastricht, it's nice piece of history, very easy to find, but don't expect more than a scene, no entry to the gate towers (unfortunately), but definitely gives the visitor an idea about that period of time.

As we meandered through the maze of streets in Maastricht, we happened upon the Helpoort. While the gates are interesting, and VERY old, it would have been helpful if there was more information about them. Still, we enjoyed taking a few pictures and puttering about the area.

One of the biggest reasons to go to Maastricht is because it is so old and has retained so much of its history, the Helpoort is the most obvious example of this. Walk through the gate and along the old city wall. For some quiet time walk through the nearby park along the Jeker river, it's beautiful.

it is very easy to walk to the Helpoort. Not too much to say about it as its just the History attached to it that makes one want to go & see it. So read about it & then go & see it!

The only remaining gate of the first line of medieval city walls. The gate has been restored and is definitely a must for tourists to take a picture of this gate.

Make sure you walk through the park ! The historic wall runs right thru the park it's beautiful ! After your walk find a square to have a nice drink and enjoy the people watching

Do not get too excited in advance, it is just about 100m of the old wall around the city with a gate preserved and the possibilty to climb up the wall. But it is situated in a nice little park, has a creek flowing through it and is a bit away from the main shopping areas, so it will give you some quiet time in which to enjoy the view and the old fortifications.

Old city gates and city walls. You had to go there and you see the beautifull view from the top of the wall.

You have to go there, free exposition in it. Go there too, it will take only about 10 min. to look around.
