It has that southern charm you expect and has been farily well kept for decades. I have not been there for a couple years. Most of my experience there was for wedding receptions and it was a very nice place to celebrate.
Beautiful house! I went to see the decor and find out the history and architecture of the home. It is a self guided tour. The docent gives visitors a several page write-up on the house and visitors are welcomed to stroll through the house at their leisure. The docent is available for questions. The home is set-up to have public functions. Would be a beautiful place to hold a wedding!
Athens' wonderful museum house/ welcome center is a great place to bring out of town guests or to pick up brochures for a projected trip. The center has great hosts, and there's been a serious effort to decorate the house in authentic period pieces and designs. There's even a nice little gift shop for that special souvenir of Athens. We've bringing friends and family to the center for over 25 years.
My wife and I love visiting historic mansions, and the Taylor-Grady mansion is prominently featured as one of Athens' primo places to tour...well, we unfortunately fully agree with the prior reviews. We were off to a bad start when per a recommendation from the visitor's center staff, we called ahead, got an answering machine. We drove to the site, rang the intercom, and got the same answering machine message...we left a message with our cell phone number, sat in our car briefly, saw a couple of cars park, and when we asked the second car's driver if she was the person responsible she opening the house, she answered in the affirmative...in a couple of minutes, we were in.From the outside, the home looks spectacular...classic Greek Revival, huge size, beautifully maintained exterior...however, due to the unfortunate series of events over years, including vandalism and neglect, the interior was left with very little of what presumably reflected its opulent better days...as noted in other reviews, very sparsely furnished, though for anyone who has appreciation of porcelain vases and large furniture pieces, there are a few items worth admiring. The interior structure is well preserved, i.e. ceilings, floors and wall coverings...but the self-guided tour really provides one with relatively little to see, as compared to other Antebellum Trail favorites such as the Hay House, Old Governor's Mansion, and so on.BTW, indoor photography is allowed...no gift shop with postcards, guides, etc...you are handed a several page text on arrival which summarizes some of the highlights of each room. So, worth a visit to check it off one's list of historic sites seen, but alas, far from the most memorable of the many we have seen. It was 96 degrees outside, so the air conditioning was, indeed, one of the highlights!
This is a picture perfect historic place!!! The staff there wasfabulous and couldn't have been more accomodating!
We will know more tonite at the wedding but so far, the staff is great, the location is georgeous, and I believe the wedding will be a success.
complete class in a house worthy of Scarlet O'Hara
Great place for weddings, good representation of antibellum home
Skip the tour. Maybe wait for an event like a wedding or whatever.
Pros: Uh... It was air conditioned!Cons: The person on duty took forever to come to the door, then proceeded to give us brouchures and tell us it was self-guided. The house was not decorated in any period and was still in use for public activities.
