I decided to visit Hills and Dales on a whim after seeing it on a tourism information website and was not disappointed. I went on a Sunday afternoon in March and there was no one there but me. After watching the short video on the history of the property I was given a guided tour. The tour was fantastic, you get to go into every room and walk wherever you want and get up close and investigate things that interest you. There are no "off limits" areas, I was even able to go into the attic and see how they have updated the heating and air conditioning as well as to the basement to see the foundation of the house. The staff are extremely courteous, knowledgeable and really seem to care deeply for the estate. If you're in the area, even up to an hour away, don't miss it.
The tour started with a short and informative movie about the history of the house and owners and gardens. Then a shuttle took the docent and I to the house, I was the only one there so I did get a personal tour and it was marvelous. It was a joy, and afterward I went down to the greenhouse and met the horticulturalist, David, who shared so much information about euphorbias and orchids and I really, really want to go back when the garden is in bloom. This is a "don't miss it" attraction.
My family visited the house for my mother's birthday. I had planned to have a picnic and let me tell you, every staff member was thrilled that we came to celebrate with them. Our tram driver helped us find a perfect spot to eat. They have tables and great grassy spots that are perfect. The house tour was wonderful. I will visit again!
Went on a trip to see the Christmas lights at Callaway Gardens. Stayed at a hotel in LaGrange vs at Callaway Gardens, to save some money. Looked for things to do, found Hills & Dales Estate. Tour is guided and very informative. I can't think of any room we didn't enter. Not very expensive. Garden guide was equally knowledgeable. I recommend seeing the film in the visitors center first. We were there at least two hours.
It was a Saturday morning and we were the only ones on our tour. Alex our host was very knowledgeable and the home was a great adventure. The day was very cold and windy so we were not able to enjoy the gardens as much as we wanted. Don't miss this one.
We visited on a weekday in October, when the weather was picture perfect, and nearly had the place to ourselves. House tour was interesting and informative, but the garden and grounds are what you really want to see. Gardeners were available to answer questions, and supplied a ton of information without even being asked. Use the garden map from visitor center to wind your way through, and just take it all in. If you live in the area, get the annual pass - what a deal! We will definitely be back.
A must see for any age. Everyone was so gracious and informative. The gardens were unbelivable and so fragrant. Like stepping back in a wonderful era.
This is a must see. Opened in 2004 5 generation of women havecreated this garden. Which was the family home to the Calloways and where the vision for the Calloway Gardens came from.Enjoy it!
Visitors to northern Georgia will heat the name Calloway a lot! The family are clearly rich and influential. A good way to learn the history is to visit Hills and Dales. We were the only people arriving at the time and got taken on our own in a buggy train through the gardens to the house. The house if beautiful and well preserved, but it is the gardens which are bets. We chatted to ground staff and spent a few hours in gorgeous and well maintained Southern gardens with greenhouses and sculpted landscapes. Highly recommended.
Beautifully restored and maintained mansion that was the home of Fuller Callaway and descendents. Excellent tours by enthusiastic docents take about 1 1/2 hours. Tour is unique in that all areas are open to the public without the usual off-limit "ropes". The Callaway and Cason families are Georgia dynasties. Their contributions in the form of Callaway Gardens & Resort and their contributions to the cultural offerings of Lagrange, Georgia are extraordinary and magnificent
We loved how pristine the house and gardens were kept up. It was like we were just invited over but the family was out for the day. Almost like the "butler" was giving us a tour of his treasured house with the only rule don't touch. It is all original like the family left it. The gardens made me feel like I was stepping back in time as I ventured through looking at herbs, hothouse, flowers and boxwood paths like generations before had passed. I even paused in the God garden to sing "In the Garden" and almost felt as if Jesus was going to walk with me and talk with me. Overall, it was a wonderful day spent learning about the generous Callaway family and touring their beloved home. We purchased season passes so we can come back as the seasons change.
Who knew this was here? If they promoted themselves more, they would be crowded with visitors, but they don't advertise much. This means if you go there, you might have the place to yourself and I experienced with a girlfriend recently. We took a day trip out of Atlanta and spent a wonderful 90 minutes touring the home and gardens. If you love historic houses with vast, expansive gardens, don't miss this. The docents were so friendly and helpful. You could almost imagine yourself living in vast splendor.
I took a group of about 40 folks to visit the estate. We had guided tours of the house and gardens and the guides were fantastic! The home and gardens were beautiful and we really enjoyed learning about the family that build/created this beautiful gift.
My daughters and I visited Hills and Dales as part of a "day trip" while staying at Callaway Gardens. The staff at the information and welcome center were just that very informative and very welcoming! The docent was even more so! We loved the tour and spent a good deal of time walking through the beautiful gardens. It was nice to step back in time and see how the "upper class" lived.
My family & I spent several hours enjoying the Hills & Dales Estate yesterday. I can't say enough about the courteous staff! My daughter planned a picnic lunch for us to enjoy and our tram diver helped us find the perfect spot at a table in the gardens near the house. You just get the feeling that everyone there loves the estate and want you to enjoy it as much as they do! The house is beautiful and the garden and grounds are gorgeous. If you are in the area, I highly recommend a visit to Hills & Dales. Better yet, make a visit here, THE reason you are in the area!!!
