Well kept Historic Site. Very informative and the short film was really great. Intern at the desk was very helpful and nice. Worth a visit.
Good use of the old school. Well preserved and interesting exhibits. The home video of Jimmy and his wife giving a tour of their home is a highlight.
Outside of the Carter Presidential Museum in Atlanta, this place tells the story of how a peanut farmer became governor and president. Carter took advantage of the perfect storm in American politics to run as an outsider in the wake of Watergate. He had accomplishments and failures like any other presidents. The Plains School does a great job of interpreting them, especially to persons too young to know JC.I went to junior high in a building much like the Plains School. It is great to see structures like this being saved and repurposed.
I had just finished college when Jimmy Carter became president. I was more focused on other things and it was beneficial to look back at history and remember the events with the insight I now have from experience. The school gives a good overview of Mr. & Mrs. Carters' life and accomplishments.
I was greeted outside by a nice gentlemen who welcomed me to the school and said it was nice to see me. He was very welcoming. The school was fun to see and learn about the history of Plains and Mr. and Mrs. Carter. Some of his personal paintings are there too. I was very interested in his historical roots, his peanut farming days and what led him to politics.Even if you were not a fan of his Presidency, you have to admire the man himself. He has been and continues to be wonderful contributor to making this world a better place.
The use of the former Plain's GA school house by the National Parks Service as a site to honor our 39th President served two purposes honoring our former President and preserving a piece of educational history for future generations. The museum was not just about the President but also about this building and how it served the community in the past. The twenty minute film on the life of Jimmy Carter was well done and worth the time. It was interesting to see how Jimmy Carter' life and his wife Rosalynn's life were depicted in the museum.
It is especially interesting to see and understand the life of our 34th president through this center. Though he typically isn't praised in history books, nor remembered as successful, in hindsight his accomplishments were commendable and this place does a good job of interpreting them. I was most taken by realizing how it would be impossible for someone like him to ever be president nowadays because of the changes in our political system.
As retired teachers we found the history of the school to be fascinating as it also focuses on the locality and of course its most famous ex pupil, Jimmy Carter. We met with a volunteer who told us about the restoration project and was very proud of the finished product and it typifies the pride the local people have in their town which comes through in all you meet in stores and restaurants.Well done the people of Plains
Very informative and insightful. I enjoyed the visit there and will be visiting again whenever I have other family members come to town.
I attended as a chaperone on my daughter's class field trip. Being a History teacher, I was naturally quite excited to get there. At the same time, I know how often museums and historical sites can be interesting, but also very dry. Plains High School provides a great opportunity to obtain an in-depth, but not to in-depth that you go to sleep, picture of former President Jimmy Carter. The center is well-decorated, and kept very organized, neat, and the people are very helpful. I couldn't wait to go back and tell the rest of my family that our summer plans were already made.
We wished we had planned more time for this outstanding trove of the history of education in the 1930s, the history of the region, and, of course, the influences on the maturing of young Roselynn and Jimmy. Great old photos! I applaud the citizens who saved this building and restored it. The exhibits are interesting, but just being in a building from that era gives you a feeling of how close knit the community was and the pride the people had in their children they were preparing for the future. The gift shop offers nice merchandise. All the people who work here are very informative.
The Park Rangers and the Movie Give This Establishment a Continuing Education of President Carter the Leader, the Community Leader, Humanitarian, and Man. The DVD for purchase is well worth the investment too
This was the small school that everyone in Plains attending durning the years JImmy Carter was growing up. That's right, first through twelve. This is where President Carter began his education before joining the Navy.
Make sure you allow yourself enough time to fully enjoy this historical school. The video is awesome and the narration is first class. Very educational and the staff was very welcoming and informative.
I simply failed to plan enough time to see and enjoy this school. Make sure you allocate 1-2 hours if you are really interested in all of the ins and outs of the history of this school. The video is amazing. Make sure you see the video (30 mins) and you will leave in awe of history.
