We toured the home and grounds several years ago, and there are lots of interesting features to this property. We're from the Charleston, SC area and didn't expect to be impressed. This property, however, has much to see besides the house itself. Its history is only 19th century, but Gov. Hardman was a man of science and discovery. W
Our tour guide shared so much history and stories about the farm. The state has accomplished so much in preserving this historic farm. On a freezing cold day, it was well worth the tour. The tours are conducted Fridays and Saturdays through November. The formal opening will be March 2015. There is a monthly email you can enroll and receive the monthly events and special lectures. Check with the gift shop on the property for tour times.
This was a pleasure - seeing this house and farm and learning of the history as well as the plans for the future for this site. Don't miss it!
This historic farm is now open for tours. It takes about an hour and a half and is wonderful. It's great for kids who want/need to know how life was before television and I-pads. Opens your eyes to just how advanced some homes could be (for those who had the means to pay for luxuries). Don't miss the photos of Woodrow Wilson and Charles who visited the farm. A true eye opener to how the 'other half' lived way back when.
what a treasure! Well worth the visit. Our DNR guide was so knowledgable and involved. Tour lasts over an hour.
Historical Home and Grounds just opened this weekend. Johnna, our Park Ranger and tour guide did and excellent job of making the history of the home and the families that lived here "come alive." The home and furnishing are "origianl." The home was built in 1870. Special crare was taken in restoration by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to insure the integrity of the original owner and builder was maintained. Thoughtout the home special care was taken by the DNR to reveal a behind the scenes look at building techniques used in constructing the home. There are 18 buildings on th grounds. Of particular interest is the dairy barn, which reveals the innovative techniques in dairy farming in the early 1900's. Enjoyable! Educational!
