Good things first; we were picked up from the hotel and dropped off at the times stated. The Navajo driver was pleasant and delighted in describing what each rock, butte and spire looked like - hence its name. We think most were translated from Navajo to English. Examples were the owl, the mittens, Camel, Elephant, totem pole etc. He gave us the best locations for photos and even took some. The not so good; the vehicle was old, dirty, had passenger window switchgear that was falling off, one slow puncture tyre and one with little tread. The 4x4 was faulty so it only had 2 wheel drive causing a dodgy moment in deep sand. The driver didn't have a deep knowledge off geography or natural history.Better vehicles were in the canyon belonging to different firms.

This was offered by our hotel as an option to view the Park, we were advised taking a car is possible but not recommended. For our fee we were collected by our guide, Ray, who was able to tell us all about the formations inMV. The benefit of being collected meant we did not have drive 25 miles each way from Kayenta. Ray took us to some superb locations in the park, from a photographic standpoint he showed us fabulous views and compositions. His interaction with the group was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our time.

We were picked up at our hotel by our guide Billy and spent 4 hours in his company. MonumentalPark was awesome and we thoroughly enjoyed Billy's company and knowledge. We learnt so much about the Navajo people, their believes, their culture and traditions. Each spot he took us to was even more beautiful than the previous. We were in a closed in four wheel drive opposed to an open vehicle which we were very grateful for as it was extremely windy and dusty. Make sure you ask for Billy, he has a wealth of knowledge to pass on and was also great company and a lot of fun.

We took a ride with a Native American from Crawley's Monument Valley Tours and it was right near the top of a vacation that included five national parks in Colorado and Utah. We rode in an open safari pickup but found it comfortable and well suited to seeing all the sights and taking pictures. Because we were with a native guide, we had access to sites on the reservation not open to day travelers on their own. And the commentary and insights were invaluable. What a marvelous set of astonishing geologic formations. One of the hits was when the guide sang native songs in the natural amphitheater. We had us seniors, three thirty-somethings and two 7 year olds. and all were intrigued and wowed by the sites.
