ellison creek waterfall

First and foremost, this place is called Ellison Creek Falls not Staircase Waterfall. Drive roughly 7.5 miles to the Water Wheel parking lot on Houston Mesa Rd. This is where you will want to park to start your hike. You will follow the river approximately 1 mile to this fall. This is a beautiful place but have seen dramatic changes in the environment due to high publicity. You will want water, hiking/water shoes, and sunscreen. Remembering to pack out what you packed in and possibly more. There is a great deal of trash that other's do not pack out. We always fill a grocery bag when we visit. In recent years, due to the internet, what used to be a quiet peaceful environment is now visited by 100's daily during the summer months. We have been there when people are packing semi-automatic weapons in large groups. Also, last summer, we witnessed a man defecating in the water that flows into the swimming hole. Be advised that during monsoon weather the clouds may not be over head but if they look ominous to the east, it could flash flood in a matter of minutes. Also, this swimming hole boarders private property and please be respectful of the fence line. Have fun and be safe!
