freeman homestead trail

A nice loop trail, as others have said downhill going and uphill back. We did find the signage a bit hit and miss, but made our way ok. Bit windy when we were there, New Years Day, so was a little cold, but worth the trek round, probably good if you have small children as not too far from them and points of interest on the way to keep them occupied.

We love this trail. It is mostly downhill on the way and uphill on the way back and although it is not a long walk, it can be very hot coming back up. It does take longer than you think it will especially in the summer heat! We saw a tortoise and long eared owls by the cliffs near the bottom.

A 1 mile round trip that supposedly leads to a small adobe house built in 1929 by Safford Freeman. The hike is a loop that is all down in one direction and all up in the other. There are marks left on rocks with spray paint every hundred yards or so that try to keep you on the trail.The scenery is the Sonora desert at it's finest; cactus and scrub are the only things to be seen. Desolate and quiet, we thought we saw a roadrunner. The trail winds down to a dry creek bed and has interpretive signs along the way.The 'homestead' is nothing more than a portion of raised ground with some of the 20'x24' concrete slab still there. If you are looking for a house, you will find none. If you are looking for beautiful desert scenery, this is for you.A warning. As novice hikers we occasionally thought we were lost or got off the trail until we saw the spray paint markings on the stone again. They aren't spaced as regularly as you'd think. Follow your instincts and you should be fine.
