This building has been around since the 1830s and was originally a warehouse on the I&M canal. I've always came here with my family to eat at the Public Landing Restaurant with awesome food. There is also a I&M canal exhibit on the first floor and art galleries upstairs. The trail is nearby as is the Lincoln Landing park and downtown Lockport.
You can kill two birds with one stone. Have a fine meal at the Public Landing Restuarant and visit the I&M canal exhibits in the historic Gaylord Building. (the Public Landing restaurant is in the Gaylord Building)
I enjoyed the history of the building and the area. The I&M canal has a deep history, which the Gaylord Building allows you to discover and explore.
See the location of the historic canal and learn about its history including photos or the Gaylords and objects relating to the canal and its location..
Lockport is a quaint small town with lots of history. If you happen upon the town, you must stop at the beautiful Gaylord Building. It sits right on the rail road tracks in a scenic area of downtown right on the I&M Canal. The building houses a small museum and the admission is free but donations are welcomed. The museum tells a story about the I&M Canal and how it's history changed the midwest. The building also houses one of the best retaurants in Lockport. I have used the restaurant for my wedding reception and my daughter's baby shower. The area around the Gaylord Building are lovey and a walk along the canal is highky recommended.
The Gaylord Building houses a small museum, as well as one of the best Restaurants in the area, The Pubic Landing. The history of the building alone is worth the price of admission (which is donation based) So if you only want to give a few dollars that is fine, but feel a bit generous and try for $5.00 or more as they could really use the money! The museum puts on a lot of interesting programs through out the year for people to get more involved in the history of the building and the area-and if you can attend one you will not be dissapointed! During the summer months you can also have lunch or dinner on the patio of the Public Landing, and walk the grounds of Lincoln Landing adjacent to the Restaurant. It's a beautiful spot!
It's a very nice building with a cool designed garden. Went to get a NPS passport stamp and was happily surprised by the nice one room museum surrounding the building of the I&M canal. I learned a lot about what the canal meant to America and for a 10 minute visit really held my attention.
A beautiful building, but if an art exhibit is not showing than really little to do. If it's a nice day, you can walk along the canal though.
The Gaylord Building is a beautiful limestone building that offers a great information booth in the lobby, a small museum, and a wonderful Restaurant. In the summer the outdoor seating area overlooking the curved bridge and I&M canal is a relaxing place to meet friends and enjoy some delicious food. Food selections are always plentiful, and tasty. Worth the trip to learn more about this quaint town and it's rich history.
The Public Landing restaurant is one of my favorites. Love the old limestone building and the food is great!
Nice menu and atmosphere in a relaxed setting. This place can be as formal or as casual as you want it to be.
