This seemed like a good place to hike. There was a lot of open space, and some trails to explore. We ran out to get some pictures, but it started pouring :(
Easy access on a dirt road, the views are wonderful in fall not a sound to be heard. Easy walking for all, two miles if you did a full loop. Worth the visit for serenity
A place with restored midwestern plant life and a few very very special Indian sacred spaces. Well worth a visit.
A lovely walk amid rolling hills, beautiful trees, and glimpses of the Mississippi River. Difficult to stay on/follow the trail, which was a mowed portion of the grass. Also difficult to identify the various Indian mounds while walking on the trail. The self guided map was helpful, but there were not consistent markers along the trail.
Very peaceful place with lovely scenery. We loved seeing the Thunderbird effigy. What a unique experience!
OK, there's not much to say other than that if you are looking to get back to nature and enjoy solitude with a view plan on taking a short trip South of the Galena City limits on Pilot Knob road to Casper Bluff. Casper bluff sits directly above the Mississippi Backwaters and offers awesome views among century old Oak and Maple trees. Great for hiking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. If you don't have the equipment, it's available at Fever River Outfitters located right outside the floodgates on Main St. in Downtown Galena
The locals have gone out of their way to restore and preserve this natural area, but it isn't a tourist destination. The Native American mounds would interest anthropologists, but there really isn't much to see. There are nice views of the Mississippi River, but there are better views elsewhere.
