If you want to add to your history knowledge go here. This home is much like most big homes of the era. The little museum in the back was not big deal.

We had a great tour with Vinetta (I believe that was her name). She was very sweet and informative. The furnishing were gorgeous and it was interesting to see how one of our president's lived during his time.

It's perfectly preserved as Gen Grant lived in it . The rooms are small as is G Washington's "Mount Vernon" . Houses just weren't huge back then . All the furniture is period if not original . It is on a hill , which is good because was prone to flooding by the Mississippi river . The whole town is just as interesting . It is all built behind two huge flood gates to hold back the river during spring run off. the town is original as it was in the 1800's . Quaint buildings ,shops and sites to visit . Very good day trip from Chicago . It is in the NW corner of Illinois .

Lady that gave the tour was very pleasant, knowledgeable about the house and answered our questions. We took our time and enjoyed the house.

Enjoyed this very much, but then I appreciate history. We walked around the grounds and read each and every plaque with information! Always love the opportunity to learn.

Had our own private tour. I love Civil War history so this was a must see. Attentive tour guide who gave us plenty of time to roam.

Staff was exceptionally knowledgeable! Very interesting. Be sure not to miss this! The furnishings are so immaculate for their age. We have visited Galena many times and don't know why we haven't taken in this site before now.

Grant didn't live here long in this particular home, but the artifacts and decor are very authentic to the period and very interesting!

Found out some years ago that he is a relative of mine. Wow can you imagine. I never had the pleasure of knowing him but just to know I am related to him is like Wow.

Loved walking through this beautiful home. It is in immaculately restored condition, the guides are well informed and the view from the front porch was breathtaking. Not to be missed if you are anywhere near Galena.

There is no charge for this tour, although they request a $5.00 per person donation. It was a nice old home and very interesting to see how the former president lived. The furniture was mostly original and all authentic. Just outside the home is a small museum and restrooms. The most interesting thing in the museum was the display on presidential pets. It was fascinating to see what kind of pets (& the sheer number) that some of the presidents had. Teddy Roosevelt had the most by far and three presidents had none.It takes a half hour to an hour to do the tour, including the small museum.

This small historic home is a good place for 5th - 8th graders to bone up on some presidential history. The tour won't take a long time (less than an hour to receive a guided tour through the house) and you will need to rotate larger groups through in spurts, but it is an interesting stop if classes are studying this portion of American history. If you are taking your own kids or grand kids for a visit, pack a lunch (there is a park across the street and down at the end of the block) or dine in one of the many fine restaurants in downtown Galena and make a day of it (lots of quaint little shops). If you have older kids and like outdoor winter sports, Chestnut Mountain Ski resort is a great place to go after the tour, too.

We took the Grant Tour - It was informative and interesting. 90% of the furnishings are original which was neat to see. Thanks!

It was closed when we went but we walked around the grounds and it was impressive. We had read the history of the home-- it was nice and the nearby properties were interesting too.
