A spur-of-the-moment decision and we turned in at Galt Preserve. Just needed to stretch our legs (OK a rest-stop too). We saw a brand-new shiny-clean facility comprising about 2 to 3 miles of groomed trails with boardwalks, kayak launch, fishing dock, covered picnic areas, and a nice rest room (a 10+ for cleanliness and accessibility). Wheelchair access on about 400 yards of it will be welcome to some, PLUS Dog Friendly! Leash required, I'm sure. A bald eagle watched us the whole time from a power pole, and we enjoyed the little mud crabs at water's edge.
It was new and the buildings are nicely done. The hiking trails are pretty boring. All scrub land. A lot of people taking their dogs there as a bathroom. Only saw a couple actually pick up their poo. Couldn't go near the eagle nest even though they are not spooked by people. Won't take you long to hike the trails.
This park opened only recently. It appears to be some logged-over scrub with a few rudimentary trails. The one trail which supposedly has an eagle nest on it was closed to protect the birds--go figure--you can stand right under an eagle nest down in Saint James City and the birds don't seem to care. You can walk your dog but this is a most unexciting park otherwise.
A nice place with great parking, bathrooms and they accept pets. Feel free to bring your kayaks and canoes as there is water and place to launch. They advertise fishing as well. There are a few shelters to bring a lunch and enjoy this little slice of heaven off the beaten path. Lots of Osprey and Bald Eagles along with other birds and wild life. Great manicured hiking trails as well.
