Visited Thurs 12th March 2015. The Great Birding Trail of Florida book says there are so many birds you will spend the day, WRONG 3-4 hours and done , Where have all the birds gone. A few shore birds, Some Ospreys nesting, and 100's of Brown Pelicans. If it was not for the "feeding frenzy" of these lovable birds we would have had nothing much to see. I have more birds in my own garden than here ( except shore birds of course)I feel the northern snowbirds (people) are much to blame, their invasion annually puts pressure on facilities and birds also, they cannot get peace to breed and flourish.Note the comments from others, NOT ONE MENTIONED BIRDS !!!!WHAT EVER YOU DO DONT GO TO THE CAFE in the park....... Everything FRIED, with attitude. No snacks despite what it says.
In past years, we camped in the park campground and always enjoyed it. We are no longer campers but made a point of visiting the park for a day and having a picnic lunch. There is now a $5 admission charge but well worth it. Beautiful beaches and well maintained facilities. We will be back.
We spent the day at the park and went to the beach. The weather was gorgeous and it was a great family park with plenty of parking and facilities. We would love to try camping here, but the waiting list is months long.
Love this place. Large, private (and quiet) camp sites (we had a pop out camper) with lots of trees (important in Aug!) and water access (see pics). The beach is just a bike ride (or long walk) away. If you choose to drive as we did once with the paddeboards, admission to the park and beaches are free with your camping pass. Two piers and a fort to explore. Lots of wild life, sea gulls etc. Even saw some dolphins right off shore. Make sure you have everything you need going in because you will pay tolls going out to the grocery store or even just down the road to the jiffy store.Bugs were not too bad. A light dusting of buy spray seemed to keep most at bay.**Have not tried to get one of the 10% reserved spots yet so I don't know how well that works but I recommend plan and reserve as early as you can. There is reason this place is always booked up.
We loved Fort De Soto beach while we were there. It was natural and full of wildlife. We enjoyed the quiet setting. It's a perfect place for a long walk on the beach. Down side- as we were leaving we realized both we, our clothes, and our blankets were covered in sand fleas. We had to run home and wash everything. As much as we loved the beauty we would not revisit this beach.
I took my dog to the Fort De Soto dog beach and was a little unsatisfied with the actual beach. There was really no clean and comfortable place to sit on the sand. The sand seemed very dirty. The day was foggy so I cannot comment on any of the other activities. I did enjoy the fact that the dogs can run free off leash. My dog enjoyed mingling and watching the other dogs play.
my wife and I visit often and love the kayaking. You can launch just about anywhere and the scenery from a kayak is beautiful. I am an avid bird photographer and have been able to get some great shots while kayaking! The beaches are beautiful and seldom crowded on week days. Love this park!
I guess with the crowds that they get there these days they have to put up restrictions but it just seems like everywhere you turn there is a sign saying "No" something.
Ft. Desoto Park has gorgeous top rated beaches, and they have a dog beach too! The campground is top-notch, you can camp out right next to the water. Excellent fishing, trails, pavilions and an old military fort. You can ride your bike, hike, kayak, visit the museum, ride the ferry or bird watch. A great place to spend the weekend, you have everything you need nearby, I highly recommend!
Beaches, walking and biking paths. Kayaking, fishing and bird watching. Picnic tables, grills and playgrounds. An old fort, two fishing piers. So much to do. A favorite place.
