Ignore the negative Nancys reviews below. This place is awesome and stunning. Stay on the beach camp site, you won't regret it.
Due to cuts in funding the park is suffering. They can't even afford to pick up the garbage! I expect it will close soon if the state can find some money to keep it up.
Nice campground. Good staff. Clean. No trees for shade. Beach and sand are nice. Campers sit on blacktop pads which are level. A long way from anywhere. We stayed in January, so we were not concerned with heat. This would seem to me to be a hot place in the summer.
Spent one night tent camping in the RV section because there was grass to put up the tent on as opposed to sand. Sand is hard to sleep on if your not a kid anymore. The bathhouses were very clean and well lite. They have a long pier and a few trails. Lots of birds but that is about it. We would only go back if staying on as host in an RV.
We took a walk on the high pier and loved overlooking the water and watching many types of birds. There were signs describing the history of the island and we enjoyed discovering this once "pirate island".
Huge paved sites close to the beach. Excellent washroom facilities. Free laundry. Close to a good grocery store. Wide clean beach that's good for swimming. Low rates.
This is a gorgeous state park! It is well-maintained and clean. And the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. We went there on a lovely November day when the temperature was in the 80's. We stood on the boardwalk and saw numerous dolphins in the Gulf. I would highly recommend a visit to this lovely state park to anyone who is even remotely close to Grand Isle.
This is a park at the far eastern end of Grand Island. The fascination is with it being remote. Water to the North, Gulf of Mexico to the South, and somewhere waaaayyy East might be Florida. In November it's empty, and with a natural setting and beach probably 6-7 miles back to the West end of the island, it gave the impression of being on a deserted island, which of course Grand Isle is NOT. Plan to spend more time there -
Our second trip to Grand Isle state park was quiet, yet still a lot of fun. The beach was not crowded and the pier is impressive. Overall a pretty good day at the beach.
Once Upon a Time (beginning in the 1980's for us), you could toss a mattress into the back of your pickup truck or Adventure Van - and drive over the dune to sleep right ON the beach at Grand Isle State Park for ten bucks a night - with showers & restrooms a couple of hundred feet away. There was lots and lots of open space to choose from so nobody felt cramped. We enjoyed many a wonderful day and night there, living like gypsies without a care in the world. But that was then, this is now! These days they permit campers to use a hot black asphalt parking lot in the blazing sun, a breeze-free mosquito haven on the backside of the dune - these are what they call "Premium" campsites - for twenty-eight bucks a night. (Hooray. So, where do I sign up???)Sure, there have been hurricanes and an oil spill and an economic downturn, but they USED TO at least have picnic tables with wooden canopies to shade them - these were located about every hundred feet along the beach, and were still there AFTER the last hurricane and the oil disaster - but now they are GONE. Two picnic tables remain on the entire beach, and both were beneath the pier (where someone had no doubt dragged them for shade - and one was half in the waves), and they are accessible only if you crawl under the rope with all of the STAY OUT - RESTRICTED AREA signs along it. You will also be disappointed if you bring your extremely obedient canine with you - because, although they used to allow you to stroll the sand with your pet on a leash, now there is a NO DOGS ALLOWED ON THE BEACH policy as well. Taking all of these factors into consideration, you don't have to wonder why the place is nearly vacant these days...
We went there with friends strictly to fish. Ocean too choppy too use our boat. There are plenty of inlets with boat ramps in which to take your boat. We caught quite a few fish. There is a pier just Outside of Grand Isle campground that you are allowed to fish off. Campground was very nice. There is tent camping available . We camped in a fifth wheel. There is no sewage hook up, but dump station available. The do take access cards from some states. Wi fi is available but it didn't Work for us. Our cell phones worked great. Already planning our next visit there.
Visited this park a few times and though it may be a little work my friends and I have really enjoyed it. Camped on the beach each time and it is a nice walk so definitely bring a wagon or dolly to haul your gear and coolers to the beach. Really good fishing especially for redfish between the beach and jetties but timing is crucial as the best fishing seems to be during the fall run. Bugs not to bad although more times than not we go early to mid fall so there is always a nice breeze. Maybe just lucky or the time of year was on our side but always seemed to have the beach to ourselves in respect to primitive camping. I would recommend an overnight visit but remember to pack light, bring a wagon or dolly, some firewood, and a few friends.
Twice this year, spring and now fall, when we have tent camped on an RV site, the insects - gnats have been bad plus mosquitoes were about. In hot weather there is only limited shade at five sites out of several dozen sites. (There are palm trees but they provide little shade.)Restrooms were air conditioned and clean. The electrical posts would not accept our cell phone charger plugs. This last time in October, we left a day early because of the bugs and heat.I would recommend tent camping in the park only during the coolest months.
This was not a park I am generally use to visiting. There was really not anything to do there. We paid two dollars a person to get in and nothing there but the beach. You couldn't really fish the pier because the water at the end of pier was only waist deep. To fish here you would have to wade out into the water a long ways. They do provide a camping area but we did not use it.
We have been to almost all the state parks in Louisiana and this was the hardest to tent camp by far. This walk from car to beach was way to far. Would have been fine for a walk but not to haul equipment to camp. Especially with children or for multiple days. I'm only 35 and have camped my whole life regularly. And 2 nights of sore feet, legs, back, a ton of sand fleas, and no shade was just way to much! The teens ended up spending their nights in the bathroom because the sand fleas had evaded router tent while zipped one the sun went down. And bug spray was no help and we had 3 different kinds. Not a drop of wood in sight. None at the front office and store ran out. The ice machine also was not working so had to keep going to store. Their was horrible smells coming from every area from trash cans with fish guts the whole time. But the restrooms were very very clean and nice. Definitely will not be camping here again like this. Park is not so bad for fishing, swimming, and crabbing. Would not recommend the tent camping for sure.
